Battling slavery in Thailand’s seafood industry

A group of activists risk their lives to free enslaved fishermen working for Thai fishing companies in Indonesia.

Migrants in search of a better future are being trafficked, exploited, abused and even murdered aboard fishing vessels.

The isolated nature working at sea or on other water bodies often deprives fisherfolk (including children) of access to the protections available in landside workplaces.

They are forced to work, unable to escape and under threat and abuse. In extreme cases, fisherfolk have been summarily executed and thrown overboard.

I don't think we realize just how prominent slavery is in the world today both physical and economical.

"A growing form of slavery is trafficking into crime. In the UK, it’s fuelled by the trafficking of primarily British children, forced into ‘county lines’ drug trafficking and trafficking of Vietnamese nationals forced to work in cannabis production."
