If this actually comes to pass it will be a huge step forward in improving animal welfare. I hope it will develop into other areas of animal welfare too i.e. the conditions farm animals are kept in; fox hunting; penalties for causing cruelty to animals; treatment of animals in abattoirs etc. etc.

Yes, saw this on the 'impartial' BBC news. The reported had to say that this wasn't achievable whilst we were in the EU through gritted teeth.

think of the other folly,  at this time of year the farmers are cutting their field hedges, this is due to EU legislation which says they cannot do it earlier because of birds nesting. yet at this time of year the hedges are full of berries and fruit for which the birds rely upon for their winter feed. no joined up thinking at all.

Re. this topic: EU membership was never going to work for Britain on this level. The member countries have such disparate views on the treatment, consideration and respect of other life forms besides humans, that you could never expect them to work together.
