Worlds first clone cow

Australian scientists today revealed they have cloned the world's first cow produced using a technique known as serial nuclear transfer.

Brandy, a healthy Holstein-Fresian calf, was born just before Christmas and created by researchers from Monash Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne and the Genetics Australia Co-operative.

The cells used to create Brandy underwent two rounds of nuclear transfer in the cloning procedure, instead of only one, before they developed into an embryo ready for implantation into a surrogate cow.

"By repeating the nuclear transfer we hoped to improve the reprogramming of the fused donor cells and produce healthier embryos, which are more likely to proceed to live births," researcher Vanessa Hall said.

Dolly, the sheep born in 1997, was the world's first animal produced using standard nuclear transfer.

Since then, there have been limited improvements in the efficiencies of cloning, with very few implanted cloned embryos surviving full-term pregnancies.

Not sure whether this is bizarre, or should be in the science forum...but oh well..
