Based on newly discovered online documents, it provides the first clear picture of the potential scale of forced labour in the picking of a crop that accounts for a fifth of the world’s cotton supply and is used widely throughout the global fashion industry. Officials said Customs and Border Protection will use its authority to block products suspected of being produced with forced labor to keep out cotton, tomatoes and related products from the Xinjiang region of northwest China. rashore Posted January 14, 2021 #6 Share Posted January 14, 2021 I think the cotton block might hurt more than the tomato one. Tomato product is at 10 mil, but U.S. imports is 2.4 bil. That 10 mil is probably just gonna be shifted to other countries for processing. The British broadcaster said on its website “several former detainees and a guard have told the BBC they experienced or saw evidence of an organised system of mass rape, sexual abuse and torture.” The allegations could not be independently verified by Reuters. It concludes there is evidence of state-mandated behaviour showing an intent to destroy the largely Muslim minority in north-western China. Though Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and most of his cabinet abstained from the vote, the non-binding motion brought by the opposition Conservative Party received overwhelming support in the House of Commons and was passed by 266 votes to 0. They include pre-recorded videos and prepared testimony by former camp inmates and religious figures. Sad stuff happening. But looking at China we need to put things into perspective...they are 1.4 billions. These things have to stop, but numbers from China always look astonishing. It would be interesting to see the umber per capita of these slaves and compare it to the number per capita of human traffiking and illegal immigrants that are used like slaves in western countries. And the number of person per capita in prisons, number of person killed in manifestation, per cops, and so on... We would be probably surprised by the numbers.
