The 8M are for the cleanup of the site, not for a rebuild, which would be at some 100M: Quote The order states the government is “assigning and allocating” $8 million to start the reconstruction work. Vázquez Garced, in a separate statement, said the funding is from budget surpluses from previous years, but didn’t elaborate further on the source of the funding. The funding, she said, would be used for removing debris from the telescope’s collapse and other environmental remediation work. (...) The $8 million, though, is only a small down payment on the cost of rebuilding the telescope, with informal estimates in the astronomy community projecting it to cost several hundred million dollars. spacenews.com

No one in need can receive supplies (water, food, generators, tarps,) but we can pledge money to rebuild a telescope, makes no sense. If approved in the future they will make another great blue state.

If approved in the future they will make another great blue state. 8 million for clean up comes out of an established maintenance fund I believe. Its going to take somewhere over 100 million to rebuild it, and that will come from NSF, DOD, foreign and private sources. Here are some reasons I do not think it is foolish. 60,000 people a year visited the site, a couple of hundred people worked there, it is a source of tourism and revenue.. It was the largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the world. It has done a lot of extraordinary astronomy over its 50 year lifetime. In addition, it was used for some DOD projects that were deemed important. It is a source not only of Puerto Rican pride but of national pride harking back to the age when the USA was first in science and technology and willing to lead the world into the future. It survived hurricanes and volcanic eruptions in the past, it could be viewed as a symbol of Puerto Rican resiliency. Its collapse and possible rebuilding are also symbolic of a larger world and our place in it. We either retake our place or watch other nations surpass us.
