I'm not aware of them being "wiped out" by the early Christians, but they were spurned by other Christians as heretics and the tradition slowly died out. If you mean the Cathars (who technically fall under gnosticism), then yes, I agree. The Christians at the direction of the Pope tried hard to wipe them out. And, btw, Luther wasn't much of a 'nice guy' either. He hated the Jews because they had no wish at all to convert to HIS ideas about Christianity.
