What do you see in each picture?

Let’s explore the many ways we fool ourselves.

with regards to the question: i'm confused with the: 'fool ourselves' bit... your point is what?

No, it is French and it says "This is not a pipe"    (though I am not sure about pipe, the letters look kind of weird)

I just checked a translator and pipe comes up as *******.  (probably that will get censored)

It is a famous painting called “The Treachery of Pipes.”

Just my $0.02 but perhaps it has to do with how likely we would be to be attracted to things (thus more susceptible to being "fooled") depending on the thoughts/feelings that are generated by exposure to said thing.

Yes, I assume there's some scale or such to gage responses, for now I'm assuming if posters agree with me, they got it right and win something.

I'm hoping for a cookie myself.

Interesting Nuke, your video is genius to me. Biology plays a huge part in things, specifically the brains hardware how we can convince ourselves something is actually good for us. I say this non judgmentally.

Psyche,

The first painting is Freud and the defense mechanisms.

The second is a painting of the bible.

The third is a famous painting called the Treachery of Pipes.

Now what do you see.

There isn’t a right or wrong answer or a test, it is just a conversation an exploration in the many ways we fool ourselves.

Maybe lie to ourselves, mislead ourselves, become brainwashed.

Every contribution on here is amazing. I thank everyone for being a part of this thread.

Let’s keep it going and see where it goes.

@third_eye nice try, but you cannot recuse yourself. Ha ha ha ha ha

Well of course you can, but I would love to hear from you.

No point other than an opportunity to explore the topic.

We lie to ourselves, we mislead ourselves, we are wired for it biologically, often we don’t even know it.

Your thoughts?

If you are interested, you do not have to be but I’d love your thoughts.

But what do the responses indicate?

I saw the abstract art in the first one, reminding me of one I consider a master of. Dali I think had an impression that lasts. I tend to associate abstract with that style.

The second one looks like the old Bible's I have in a collection. Every one I have over 60 years old looks very much like that. The written columns, cover, etc seem distinct of early Bible's.

Why is the pipe associated with treachery?

How do we fool ourselves like this?

Sorry, I don't think I'm really following.

I am struck by how curious and humble and interested you are. Thank you for your questions.

I think we fool ourselves when we make claims that have no evidence, I think we fool ourselves when we claim we would never ever lie. I am curious like you too, and want to explore this with the group and come together as a group.

We fool ourselves not unlike your example of Dali, good pull by the way. I almost used a Dali painting.

I am not sure if you had a chance to read this thread, but eighty, desert, NW, Jay, third, bendy, Guyv, etc. etc. etc I know you do not have a lot of time, but this thread is a good one. IMHO

I am not 100% certain if I am following, either.

I think the "fooling ourselves" part comes in when we associate feelings and thoughts to objects/symbols that are otherwise objectively unrelated to the thoughts/feelings that we have.

Also, I am wondering: what if what you're potentially perceiving as being a bible illuminated by candlelight is actually not a bible/intended to be a bible?

The second picture made me think of this song by Peter Gabriel.  It’s about his soul traveling and finding an open book that has his new name on it.

  • Rose Colored Glasses

I don't know why I keep on believing you need me
When you've proved so many times that it ain't true
And I can't find one good reason for staying
Maybe my leaving would be the best for you

    But these rose colored glasses
    That I'm looking through
    Show only the beauty
'Cause they hide all the truth

And they let me hold on to the good times, good lines
The ones I used to hear when I held you
And they keep me from feeling so cheated, defeated
When reflections in your eyes show me a fool

    These rose colored glasses
    That I'm looking through
    Show only the beauty
'Cause they hide all the truth

So I'll just keep on hopin', believin'
That maybe by counting the many times that I've tried
You'll believe me when I say, "I love you"
And I'll lay these rose colored glasses aside

    These rose colored glasses
    That I'm looking through
    Show only the beauty
'Cause they hide all the truth

Maybe "lie" is the incorrect term to use. Think more in terms of cognitive bias/distortions/etc.

None of us are free of cognitive distortions/bias, though... which is why our brains are not nearly as reliable as we'd like to think.
