Hungary has become the first country in the European Union to give preliminary approval to the Russian coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff confirmed both the Russian jab and the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine had been given the green light by the health authorities.

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto is travelling to Moscow for further talks, where he is expected to discuss a shipment and distribution deal.

Early results from trials of the Sputnik vaccine have shown promising results.

Nah, it's just Orban with his ever the same shtick.

His domestic political platform requires such theatrics, so be it. At least he's insisting on vaccines from more sources, not going fully insane with herd immunity and similar morbid, eugenic fantasies.

Also, it's quite tasteless to hope for a "crisis" related to health of people in the EU.

The EU drug regulator will begin investigations next week on whether clinical trials of Russia's Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine followed global clinical and scientific guidelines, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

The European Medicines Agency's probe comes as people familiar with the regulator's approval process told the FT that Sputnik V trials had not been ethically run.
