nobody thought that Trump would be convicted - that wasn't the point - the point was to show the world and Americans that Trump was responsible and that republicans lacked morals or courage. To that extent it seems to have been very successful

After the Senate rendered its final verdict, Mitch McConnell, though he voted for acquittal, condemned Trump's behaviour and said he engaged in a "disgraceful dereliction of duty."  "There's no question that president Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day," McConnell said  Trump impeachment trial: What verdict means for Trump, Biden and America - BBC News

They were no more partisan than you are.

Well Mitch practically told them them to instigate legal proceeding.

“President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he was in office.”

“He didn’t get away with anything, yet,” McConnell said, noting that “we have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil litigation. And former presidents are not immune from being [held] accountable by either one.”

McConnell votes for acquittal but says 'no question' Trump responsible for riot (cnbc.com)

I thought it was possible more would vote, though thought it unlikely - felt the vote on constitutionality were 5 republicans went against the party line was the likely outcome.

given Mitch's words - its likely he wants the trump influence gone - but wants it removed using party mechanisms - perhaps?

The only really objectionable thing about his presidency for me was insisting that the election was stolen.  He really was too stupid about that. I hope he doesn’t run again that last bit was unforgivably stupid and petty.  I long for the days of great statesmen. There are none now. We are drowning in partisan politics and mediocre leadership

Oh I admit to being partisan were Trump is concerned - but I deliberately quoted the leader of the Republicans in the senate saying that trump was practically and morally responsible for that day.

The world over.

Can't think of any outstanding leaders at the moment.

I, for one, would be surprised if the Republicans backed another bid for office for Trump. They might, but I don't think they will.

I know my Republican Senator, Toomey, voted guilty. He told us months ago he isn't running for re election so that's over and done. The other 6 may be replaced, or maybe not.

When you lower the bar to let a President who sexually assaulted a young girl in the oval office go scot free--then try to put him and his wife back in the White House, again--pretty much anything goes. It's hard to hold the moral high ground with your feet planted firmly in a swamp.

Nobody holds the moral high ground.  The decision is always to try to climb back out or remain in the swamp.

So true it did not start with Trump, maybe not even with Clinton.  Trump just added a little quicksand.

President Trump convinced a lot of people that our elections are worthless and can't be monitored sufficiently to prevent fraud.  Not really a lot of point in the Dems going to a lot of effort to hold an honest election in 4 years is there?    That gives the  deep state plenty of time to lure the troublemakers out  in manageable groups and take care of them.  As evil as some think the deep state and Dems are, they probably predicted this and just watched  to put forward the notion that all opposition is violent unreasonable scum whether they carry BLM or Trump signs.

OMG yes! And everyday we're going to hear mostly about Trump all year long in the media until they actually get him on something. It's going to drive everybody nuts hearing about Trump coming out of every reporter's mouth everyday. Before long, we'll be wishing they would hurry up and get him on something and be done with it already.

The reason they hate Trump is that he was throwing sand into the gears of the Good Ol Boys club, where you go to Washington to enrich yourself and your friends at the expense of the tax payers, working class Americans. He was spoiling their gravy train. IOW, he's NOT an establishment politician.

And once they’ve convicted him, it’ll be wall-to-wall “why we convicted him” and “what his life in gaol will be/is/was like”.
Frankly, let’s hold Joe to the same standards and establish once and for all that the President isn’t god.

One response to the Capital invasion has been whatabout the protests and riots this summer?  They were destructive and bloody.  Yup.  They were.  And they were wrong when redress for grievance became destruction.  That is outside our system of laws.

Now it seems like some are treating the Capital riot as a justified response.   The shoe is on the other foot,

Trouble is, both feet belong to us and the shoe still hurts..

I'd agree any rioting is wrong. Any violence to try to effect change is wrong.

So it's accepted as a precedent; and, the standard you expect of high office.  Got it.

Its going to be like, "What if Clinton runs again?". ........ And she didn't. Even though it was still "Her Turn".

I think after four years of not being president, Trump will move on. He might support someone else, like Ivanka, or Kushner, running, but not himself, I think.

Seems like based on that quote, he thinks there's a chance in a criminal case, or a civil case, but says nothing about a political case.

Can't blame him. There's been no political good will created with Republicans to be spent on Conviction. Its all politics, not a actual Judicial trial, after all.

The dems have to keep up the Trump show for as long as they can, before people start paying attention to what they are actually doing, plus CNN will go bankrupt without that.

I hope they keep it up into 2022. It will spur the R voters, and after redistricting from the Census, the Ds will be swept from the House and Senate.

Biden has a two year window to get things done.

Well good.  We have moved into a stage where an executive is more important than the Constitution.  Can't wait to see how the Dems exercise their new found freedom.

Some will say thats been true for a while.

Supposedly Joe's already signed more executive orders then Trump did, or Obama in his first four years.

Not illegal, but interesting to watch.

It was a perfect storm a month ago, the confluence of all the crazies in the Republican Party, egged on by Trump or with plans of their own. Trump wanted a raucous demonstration and got more than he bargained for. Who would have anticipated the Capitol Police Force, numbering in the thousands, wouldn't be able to secure the building against a mob? Well, Trump got elected because the Dems insisted on putting Hillary and that "executive" husband of hers they'd lowered their standards for, back in the White House. No one would touch the Clintons with a ten foot pole this time around. The only reason he didn't win a second term is because of the coordinated campaign waged by the mass media, in collusion with the Democrats, to ignore and suppress any news that might sway voters in his favor. Many of them have flat out admitted it. Now, a politically partisan MSM is socially acceptable behavior.  I liked most of his policies and his restraint in not plunging us into another brushfire war and I hate most of Biden's policies and politics but, Goddamn! I'm glad Trump's gone. He was like a foul taste that never went away. I'll be glad when the Dems get him out of their system and his name is spoken no more by the nations of man.

I actually expected more republicans to vote to impeach to keep him from running again. They were pretty mad that he hijacked the party in 16

I've added another item on the list of things in life that are inevitable.  We can always count on death, taxes and the cowardice of politicians.  In this instance, I think their cowardice is a positive indicator.  They knew they'd lose their next election if they voted to convict and that should tell the Left that millions still support Trump and most likely will do in 2024.  These Leftists who are so full of hate they can't understand that his supporters in MANY instances are not pleased with his rhetoric, his vulgarity or his never-ending diatribes about those who were against him.  They STILL will support him though because he's the only one we've seen in that job that has even TRIED to keep promises.

Well if Biden ever commits tax fraud or pays hush money to porno stars, sure, why not.
