The following is a list of events that led up to and ensued after what is arguably the single greatest medical fraud of the 21st century. Each fact is supported by a source or sources. The list is a work in progress, please feel free to add any information you deem relevant.

1955: In April 1955 the FDA approves hydroxychloroquine as a drug safe to use.

2019: In November 2019 the Wuhan Coronavirus hits the world. From Wikipedia:

2020 May: On 22 May, in arguably the biggest medical fraud of the century, The Lancet, the world's most prestigious medical journal, publishes a study that claims that hydroxychloroquine is dangerous.

As a response, hydroxychloroquine production stops, supplies get pulled from pharmacies and doctors around the world stop prescribing it to patients.

Following criticism from a large number of doctors questioning the authenticity of such a dubious study, The Lancet subsequently launches an investigation, and upon uncovering the fraud, RETRACTS the article from its website.

But the damage was done. The WHO had ordered countries to stop using it, and European Union countries had banned its use (outside clinical trials) for Covid-19 treatment.  Clinical trials themselves, such as the NAID trial announced by the US National Institutes of Health on May 14, were cancelled.  A hostile press frightened people from re-entering clinical trials that might have cleared it for use.

2020 April: The effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine is reaffirmed by a study conducted in Italy, one of the worst hit countries in the world. The findings:

"The Italian Society for Rheumatology studied 65,000 patients on long-term hydroxychloroquine for RA and Lupus.
Only 20 patients tested positive for COVID-19. No ICU, no deaths.
This is a 90% reduction in infection rate compared to the rest of Italy."

2020 July: On 27 July, at a press conference in front of the Supreme Court, members of a group called America’s Frontline Doctors, led by Simone Gold, MD, testify to hydroxychloroquine as a cheap cure for covid.

Importantly, in this report, the authors made no claims that patients treated with HCQ and azithromycin actually experienced any clinical benefits, as compared to untreated patients. Clinical responses were subsequently reported by the authors, but in a study that had no control group.

The conclusion? Those of us who have spent decades critically examining studies of drug efficacy would refer to the Gautret-Raoult paper as representing "uninterpretable data," We would not refer to their observations as "evidence."

Might HCQ work in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia? An observational study of 181 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia reported no difference in a clinical course of patients who received HCQ and those who did not.

At this time, there is no good evidence that chloroquine or HCQ has meaningful clinical benefits in patients with COVID-19. Well-designed trials are in progress.

Update: here’s the answer. The number is completely fictional. As mentioned here in the comments, the president of the Italian Rheumatology Society was contacted directly and states that this number is completely wrong, that the society is monitoring 150 patients in its registry, 20 of whom are taking hydroxychloroquine. The 65,000 number is bogus.

The initial report came from China stating that lupus patients did not have COVID-19 yet. That got Raoult to slap together  his paper. It was retracted. So he made up some data and tested patients without their knowledge including children.

Now he has published 3 papers based on whatever he did last year. He is not the first author on the papers.

Basically his latest effort from December 2020 says that the results are not statistically significant, i.e. HCQ doesn't work.
