Has science solved the Dyatlov Pass mystery?

A 62-year-old adventure mystery that has prompted conspiracy theories around Soviet military experiments, Yetis, and even extraterrestrial contact may have its best, most sensible explanation yet—one found in a series of avalanche simulations based in part on car crash experiments and animation used in the movie Frozen.

In an article published today in the journal Communications Earth and Environment, researchers present data pointing to the likelihood that a bizarrely small, delayed avalanche may have been responsible for the gruesome injuries and deaths of nine experienced hikers who never returned from a planned 200-mile adventure in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the winter of 1959.

Wow. Read the OP statements as well as the above link, and I'm still somewhat perplexed by this tragedy, though I'm sure there is a set of reasonable explainations.

There was a rumour that another group saw some jets or helicopters dropping bombs causing the avalanche

They followed the footprints to find 5 bodies, so the avalanche injured those 5 and they ran away and died from exposure?

Yeah this doesn't even make sense. How did they follow their tracks if there was an avalanche and how did it bash their heads, yet the tent and stuff was still sitting in the camp site and visible.

Umm, did they not find the girls tongue cut out and her eyes? If this is the correct one I remember.

Not sure how an Avalanche conjured Sharp Precision objects and went for her eyes and tongue.

I agree with you BOwn. Avalances can't do that. Either animals did it , or maybe a Alma, as the russians call their Bigfoot. If the lady's tongue, etc. were removed post mortum(after she died) then it was animals. If before death, then something else was invovled.

I suspect that their exterior body froze in their tent. Not being able any more to radiate their internal heat, they got very hot, and started to undress in the hope to cool off, which exacerbated their freezing condition, and they next cut open their tent to get outside - again in the hope to cool off. There they froze to death.

I remeber a lengthy discussion about this years ago, and a bunch of us pulled up all kinds of resources. We concluded with an avalanche as well followed by a series of survival attempts where a tree had to be climbed to get wood to start a fire, clothing removed form those who had succumbed, and eventually one group seeking better shelter but succumbing to the elements and potentially tumbling down a nearby ridge. Then we pulled up some information on how small animals will scavenge the tungs out of the dead because that is last part of the body to freeze because it is reachable.

Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Assists Researchers Analyzing 62-Year-Old Mystery Of Dyatlov Pass

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/frozen-dyatlov-pass_n_601b1b82c5b62bf30753dc2f

The snow in the 2013 film was animated so well that it helped one scientist develop a simulation to study the grim 1959 death of nine Russian hikers.

Researchers looking into one of the theories behind the Dyatlov Pass incident, a 1959 unsolved mystery that saw nine hikers killed during an expedition into Russia’s Ural Mountains, drew inspiration from one unlikely source — Disney’s 2013 hit film ''Frozen''.

Post-publication careers: follow-up expeditions reveal avalanches at Dyatlov Pass

Having shed new light on an old mystery—how nine Russian mountaineers perished in the Urals in 1959—Alexander Puzrin and Johan Gaume got hooked. Three expeditions later it is clear that avalanches are not exceptional at Dyatlov Pass.

“On the 28th of January 2022, exactly 63 years after the Dyatlov group was seen alive for the last time, two professional mountain guides from Ekaterinburg, Oleg Demyanenko and Dmitriy Borisov, left for the Dyatlov Pass on two snowmobiles,” said the researchers in the study. “The initially favorable weather conditions quickly deteriorated, with wind and temperatures becoming similar to those on the night of the 1959 tragedy.”

“Several times, the 300-kg snowmobiles and their drivers were overturned by wind gusts,” they added. “Visibility became extremely poor. And then, when after a few failed attempts the two mountain guides approached their destination, the visibility briefly improved and revealed traces of two snow slab avalanches.”

Demyanenko and Borisov documented the remains of these avalanches and observed them vanishing under the snowfall within about an hour of their discovery.

“No wonder then that the Dyatlov rescue team could not find signs of an avalanche 3 weeks after the incident,” noted Puzrin and Gaume. “This also explains why no avalanches have been observed there before: in such severe weather conditions the Pass cannot be easily accessed by hikers, while traces of small slab avalanches disappear within a few hours.”

Predation by birds. They'll go for the eyes and the tongue gets exposed after death.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident - Atlas Obscura

Firstly, why I do not believe - and never did, that there was any avalanche atop Dead Mountain that night.
I. The tent was erected properly, with the back end facing up-slope, and the front end with the flap opening facing down-slope.
So when the this alleged avalanche approached them, they logically should have exited the tent from the front, *away* from the approaching
avalanche, and where there is an existing opening, the flap. Instead, they all waited as somebody cut a hole in the rear of the tent and everyone
exited the tent from there head on into the avalanche. This makes NO SENSE. To me, this says quite strongly that what scared them to death
was in *front* of the tent, not the rear, not an avalanche.

II) there was about three weeks before rescuers got to the scene. Yet still, the tent was visible - not covered over with snow. Remember when you
look at that pic of the tent, the pic was taken *after* the tent was broken into with an ice axe. (I have one other reason but will stop here for brevity's sake)

THE PHOTO
I have gone through two prior threads on DP in U-M in the past. So curious that no one ever wanted to even discuss this above photo. This was the
last photo taken by the DP group from the tent. The head investigator said they did not know what the orb in the photo was. The other lighted object, they felt,
was a misacting octagonal aperture in the camera. But I disagree. An aperture would block light, perhaps, and leave a shadow, but it cannot create light.
So I think both objects in the photo are real. The question is - what are they???

PS: Something that has really bothered me: While the skiers waited for someone to cut an exit hole in the rear of the tent,
why didn't the half-dressed students get dressed, or at least grab their boots and clothes? Bugs the hell out of me.

Did people still not understand that it was a brutal murder of the entire group?

The version of the avalanche is untenable, since during an avalanche people have characteristic fractures of their arms and legs, but this was not the case. The group left the tent under duress, went down the slope where they were overtaken by the attackers after several hours of inspection of the tent.Part of the group rushed run to the tent where they were sequentially killed. There were three attackers somewhere, since they could not kill everyone in one place at once, therefore such a spread of bodies (near the flooring, near the cedar and towards the tent)

The version of the avalanche is beneficial for the official authorities in order to attribute everything to nature and not be held responsible.

Show any forensic specialist the characteristic blows to the bodies of tourists and everyone will say that people were beaten with a swing with a long object, breaking ribs and numerous blows to the head and abrasions. The tourists fought desperately, but they had no chance to survive against blows from all sides.
I am surprised at people who do not see obvious things that are simply in front of their noses and are officially carefully documented, since a pathologist cannot write a lie when examining bodies.
But the official authorities can easily bring everything to an avalanche, but the facts of damage to the bodies break their entire official version, which is why this case has become so overgrown with incredible versions. The main question is who brutally killed tourists by cutting off the tongue, gouging out their eyes and inflicting severe blows on the bodies of tourists. And now the authorities can openly say who did it? Of course not, this is the Soviet government, which can blatantly lie to your face.
