9-yr-old girl pepper-sprayed by NY cops

Yes, I believe so.  They obviously have no choice but to subdue her.  That can be done to a 60 or 70 pound person without chemicals.  Suppose she has COPD or Asthma, pepper spray can have dangerous affects on people with respitory issues.

I can't disagree there. Pepper spray seemed like a poor choice.

yea, a heavy punch to the head  to knock her unconscious, would be much safer,

Yep, use a bludgeon, fast and efficient...

Can they just bring an ambulance at the same time ? Maybe they have more experiences with mental illness than cops... anyway, they cannot bring the girl in prison, her destination is more a mental institute or an hospital.

For others across the pond, do yall hear about stuff like this in your countries? Something is seriously wrong with law enforcement in this country, in general

There are many cases of poor judgment.   But there are over 600,000 police officers in the USA.    I would bet that any group of 600,000+ people has a good amount of poor choices happening.

I think they should not have sprayed her.

However, I don't really feel sympathy for her too much.

I'm pretty sure I could subdue a nine year old safely with two other fully grown people helping without anyone getting injured.  Especially if she was already cuffed.

Sounds a little crazy, but maybe giving a distraught 9 year old a teddy bear might have diffused the situation somewhat.

maybe it was not a mental issue at all,  but a parenting failure and exposure to culture that glorifies violence

Bingo.  Maybe that is the issue.  If the capital rioters were not mental cases, they must have been the adult children of bad parents who glorified violence. Hundreds of cops with shields and clubs should have just caved their heads in on the capital steps and never let them threaten law and order.   Is that where you are going with this?

What I saw think it was on ABC News, the mother and father had a fight. The girl got upset and left. Then she returned   then the police were called. If the girl made the threat to kill her and her mother, it was a reaction to the parents argument.A way to say to the old man, well if you think we are so horrible and a burden, then I will kill mom and myself, and we will be out of your lives forever.I'm not a shrink. BUT if the intial story was what  ABC said, then that might have been the girls response, in which case the police should have called EMS instead of pepper spraying the girl.Maybe the father called the cops, not mom, and some how she is covering for him, just as women will cover for a man in a domestic dispute  even if hit.Recall  one time my dad getting a call from Milwaukee from his niece in law wanting daddy to bail  his nephew out of jail. When my dad found out why,(he hit her)  he said no. Also, couldn't the female officer talk to the girl in the police car woman to woman and ask what was going on? That too might have helped  change things. More to this story than they are saying.

^^^^ it seems like you do not know what exactly happened between them,  but you blame the father by default. in fact  it was the mother to came out and argued with the girl in front of cops, not the father.   that is pretty sexist way of thinking you got there..

What makes you think she was taking the moms side and not the dads?   Your theory is possible though.

Moms abuse children too. It just looks a little different than when the father is abusive

A police state society? Authoritarianism? Is that how extreme you'd want things to be?

it sure is, but human flaws make it  unattainable in real world.  same for communism and socialism,   it works great in animal kingdom,  just not anywhere where humans are involved

You know, I’m fairly certain the creators of Judge Dredd were literary Punks, in the cultural sense of the words.

New York state lawmakers have introduced legislation that bans law enforcement officers from using chemical irritants on minors.

It was a quick response to Rochester Police pepper-spraying a handcuffed 9-year-old girl as officers were responding to a call of a family disturbance last week. Video of the girl's encounter with police was released by city officials, sparking protests in the city Monday evening.

City officials have "removed three officers from patrol duties" that were involved in the incident, according to the Rochester Police Department. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the encounter "disturbing and heartbreaking."

Overreaction.  This will lead to people getting shot more.   If you are a cop and are in a situation where maybe pepper spray is needed.  The perp looks like he might be a minor so you don't even consider using pepper spray.

You have the cop there too. The best solution is to have both and that is what some places are piloting with "mobile crisis units".

I don't think social worker alone is good, no.

Absolutely not just one social worker. They have bias too. There needs to be more positive support for her before they have any legitimate reason for putting her in a car and pepper spraying her. I don't know if it is a federal law, but where I am located, individuals that state that they are suicidal to social workers (not to family or anyone else) are required to be taken by the police or brought to a hospital. I think that the law should only be contacted when there is serious violence apparent or to report a burglarly or something like that. This case was not one of those. She could have been handled by the family. I think the failure here was in the communication between the parents and the child.

One such example... I had a rough childhood. When I was a minor, I was hospitalized for depression because I was suicidal. After leaving hospitilization, my parents tried to use the mobile crisis units as a threat. One night when I was doing homework, they insisted on calling the mobile crisis unit because I would not go out to dinner with them. They called the unit and the unit told them that the call was inappropriate and was meant for emergencies.

I worked in the mental health care system years after that, fundraised, and joined a mental health awareness group on my campus. I have noticed that there is an increase (or rather reversal) of empathy towards the emotions of anger and depression within the last four years. The situation I just mentioned in the last paragraph seems to be becoming more common again and people randomly point fingers and assign people as some name of a disorder to feel privileged. People get away with stuff like that all the time now, and they actually take the person away. Therapists and cops should be able to talk through things with patients before forcing them into those **** hospitals or prisons. The conditions can be horrible. I would know. Luckily, this girl got away. Good freaking thing.

  • 2 weeks later...

A nine-year-old black girl pepper sprayed by police begged "please don't do this to me" and "it's burning my eyes" as she waited handcuffed in the back seat of a police car for 16 minutes, according to new police bodycam footage.

The Governor is furious and the Mayor cannot do a thing because of State laws. Oh well, sure glad we don't have law makers who could change this. We have law makers, but not a damn thing changes. No reform, rules or regulations that should be followed by every department nationwide.  These things will continue to happen because law enforcement has free reign and get out of jail cards.

I reckon they were justified using pepper spray, if they did anything else they probably would have been charged with some kind of assault. Kids are just baby humans, some are decent, some aren't. These Veruca Salt types need to learn a lesson.

You have to be severely *****ed in the head if you can justify what happened to this little girl. She is a child and children who are put in these situations are victims not criminals. I literally can not think of a single scenario where purposely hurting a child is justifiable. The fact that it has to be explained that its not okay for an adult to purposely harm a child is insane, there's seriously something wrong with some people.

So if a nine year old blows someone's head off we tell them to sit in their room for 10 minutes? They need to learn there are repercussions and I remember at 9 I knew right from wrong.

You’re really justifying the macing of a 9 year old girl with mental issues  by saying “i knew better so she should too...” the levels arrogance, cold hearted nature, bigotry  and simple lack of compassionate humans on this site is appalling. Seems all the Trump****s, and klan members have found a new home on unexplained. Simply disgusting

Have you ever seen Children of the Corn?,lol. I didn't see anything about mental issues. As said if they manhandled her it would have been worse for everyone. This may have saved her life because going off the rails can get you shot as an adult. I also hated Trump and racism by the way.
