Andrew Neil announces 24 hour GB News channel to rival BBC and Sky

Andrew Neil is launching a 24-hour TV channel to rival rolling news from the BBC and Sky.

Mr Neil will be the face and chairman of GB News, bringing to an end of his relationship with the BBC, where he has been one of the most respected political interviewers.

Plans are in place for “Britain’s news channel”, aimed at those who feel “underserved and unheard by their media”, to launch early next year.

The channel could shake up the rolling TV news landscape, currently dominated by Sky News and BBC News.

As well as being appointed chairman and broadcaster, the former Sunday Times editor will host a flagship evening programme in primetime, leading the programming line-up.

The 71-year-old said: “GB News is the most exciting thing to happen in British television news for more than 20 years.

“We will champion robust, balanced debate and a range of perspectives on the issues that affect everyone in the UK, not just those living in the London area.”

News, News, News. Why don't they come up with a 24 hour music channel? Something to think about!

They have. We get about forty of them from country to rap to children's songs.

Who's bankrolling it?

"GB News has financial backing from Discovery, Inc., Legatum and Sir Paul Marshall and has been forecast by the Financial Times to be "right-leaning"."

'Right leaning' as I said..... a bit of balance at last. :tu:

Well considering the vast majority (including a lot of previous Labour supporters) voted in a conservative government & voted consistantly for Brexit, to have a news outlet that is in tune with that is most welcome, and not before time.

Andrew Neil is a giant amongst pygmies in UK journalism.  the fact he's the editor and will front his own shows is enough for me to watch. - real views cutting through the bull poo.

China's state-owned broadcaster has had its licence to broadcast in the UK revoked by media watchdog Ofcom.

Ofcom said the company that owns the UK licence for China Global Television Network (CGTN) doesn't have day-to-day control over the channel, which is against its rules.

Star China Media Limited (SCML), which owns the licence, "did not have editorial responsibility" over the English-language satellite news channel, Ofcom said.

Nice, did not know that. Will get me one of those boxes where pictures are moving. If they had something like that in color that would be amazing. Sometimes I think I am way ahead of my time.

Andrew Neil today slammed 'woke warriors' for trying to cancel his new GB News channel before it even starts.

The former BBC presenter laid into activists after they launched a sabotage campaign against his soon-to-be-launched TV channel.

Twitter activists are urging firms not to advertise with the new station under the hashtag 'Don'tFundGBNews', because they fear the channel will be 'like America's Fox News' - a comparison bosses have rejected.

"And those backing the campaign, including equality campaigner Femi Oluwole"

Wasn't he the prize pillock that fronted the remain campaign.

"One Twitter user said: 'Democracy to the far left is now a mix of mass censorship, persecution and an absolute intolerance of hearing an viewpoint that is different to their own.

'But all the time they project how 'inclusive' they are. A very dangerous form of hypocrisy.'"   .........how very true.

Speaking to the Sunday Express about the new channel, Andrew Neil said: 'I believe our national conversation has become too metropolitan, too southern and too middle-class.

'Some journalists and commentators seem too confident that their liberal-left assumptions must surely be shared by every sensible person in the land.

'But many of those same sensible people are fed up. They feel left out and unheard.'    ............Also very true.

Here is the downside, a 24 hour news channel needs a lot of news to fill air time and sell commercials.  If there is really not enough happening in the world, then they have to make stuff up.

Used to be a couple of hours of TV news a night.  That got us through wars and space launches  cold wars and walls coming down.

Is it coincidence that when 24 hour dedicated news channels started appearing, fake news started proliferating?  24 hours of left wing fake news, 24 hours of right wing fake news, 2 hours of facts.  Hard choice.

So really its not news you are lacking but feel-good hugs and reassurance that  other people share your view?

No wrong. What  we have at the moment is a national news channel with a heavy left wing, London centric liberal bias and no balance. What is needed is that missing balance. If you have watched the BBCs output over the last 10 years or so, you could have observed it.

And I'm far from alone, read a few thousand reviews :-

1525 x 1 star reviews, and no reviews 2 stars or higher.

Says it all. Shut it down!

Yes. Funny, looked at the reviews and if you look at the first page most of the reviews accuse the BBC of being right wing. But then if you look, those all appeared 5 days ago.... before 5 days ago 99% rightly accuse it of left wing bias. Makes me think somebody at the BBC didn't have a lot to do 5 days ago.

The key people moving to GB News and who else is rumoured to be joining them.

The arrival of GB News has been billed as the biggest news channel launch in the UK since Sky News more than 30 years ago

The channel, led by former BBC host Andrew Neil, has set itself up as a mixture of news, opinion, and debate, rather than rolling 24-hour news like BBC News or Sky.

GB News’ chairman will also host a primetime hour-long programme at 8pm for four nights a week when the channel launches.

The show will apparently feature regular guests, such as Michael Portillo and Diane Abbott, as well as segments named “Wokewatch” and “Mediawatch”.

GB News is going to be spewing right-wing bile, the kind of stuff the Express, the Telegraph  and the Mail excel in. Gammon Central.

Our mainstream media is almost exclusively right wing. The Express is a comic, the Mail is close following, the Telegraph thinks of itself as a high brow broadsheet but it is  a high-brow comic.

The Guardian is left wing, the Mirror is left wing but unimportant.

The BBC tries so hard to be impartial that it gives disproportionate air-time to the right wing (disproportionate in the sense that they give air time to people who  have nothing useful to say, like Farage pre-Brexit) and now that  BoJo the Clown has appointed a Tory doner as Director General it is going to be even harder for it to remain the world-respected organ it is).

The problem all countries have, not just the UK, is that the regions that feel "left behind" and that are indeed left behind in terms of funding, education, opportunities, and inclusion in the general increase in wealth of a country, are easy prey to unscrupulous politicians who foster and exploit xenophobia.

Witness our so-called "Red-wall" which is the traditionally Labour Party supporting poorer working classes of the North of England. They have swung to supporting the Tories, believing the lies and propaganda that their deprivation is due to the EU and foreigners. (You can see this very sentiment by some posters on UM).

They forget that the Tories have been in power for a decade, so any lack of economic progress is due to them, not any "outsiders". The only hope for the UK is that they learn that they are being exploited before irreparable harm is done to the UK.
