Tatetopa Posted February 20, 2021 #34 Share Posted February 20, 2021 Know this one? Invictus William Ernest Henley - 1849-1903 Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. OR THIS ONE From far, from eve and morning And yon twelve-winded sky, The stuff of life to knit me Blew hither; here am I. Now - for a breath I tarry Nor yet disperse apart - Take my hand quick and tell me, What have you in your heart. Speak now, and I will answer; How shall I help you, say; Ere to the wind's twelve quarters I take my endless way. A. E. Housman: A Shropshire Lad We are here for a moment in time, an assemblage of molecules that has joined together before in many different organisms and in the hearts of stars and will disperse and join again after we cease. We are part of the universe and aware, that is a wonder. We have existence, it may not be long but we get woven into the story of the universe. Is becomes was and we fade but the fact of our brief being will be a part of the universe until it too ends. Does the universe care? Nope. But that is just as good as forgiveness and acceptance. No judgement except by yourself and the beings you interact with. 2

Neither the op, nor the rules, say anything against a theist or agnostic debating the pov of an atheist, once that pov was offered. I agree that, initially, the Op asks for offerings from atheists but, if that was all which was allowed, after 20 posts there would be nothing else to say Your last point doesn't make sense. I don't smoke or drink. yet still have a right to come in to any place, like a pub or supermarket, selling smokes and alcohol, and ask for chips and soda pop

No judgement except by yourself and the beings you interact with. The first bolded bit forms the basis of my own philosophy of life The second bolded bit enunciates how i believe each of us should relate to others, I was lucky enough to have a "classical" high school education, including Latin, poetry, literature, maths, physics, chemistry, history, geography, etc. Poetry always had power for me. especially poems about the human condition. There is some good modern poetry but the classics have the greatest power. We learned off by heart a hundred or more poems during our high school years Some of my personal favourites include but are not limited to https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/20-best-poems/ Ps I learned, loved, and was motivated by these poems when I WAS an atheist They are the sorts of things an atheist could offer to the world, and I think it quite likely that some of the writers, a t least, WERE atheists brief google later............................................. Tennyson was a pantheist Kipling followed no particular religion but was a theist Henley, who wrote Invictus, was an avowed atheist No one really knows what beliefs, if any, Robert frost held Frost never made his beliefs clear, prompting biographers and others to theorize he was, among others, an atheist, a Unitarian, an agnostic and a follower of Swedenborgianism, his mother's religion. Shelly, of course, was an atheist, and wrote an essay called "The necessity of Atheism" So there you go Edited February 20, 2021 by Mr Walker

XenoFish Posted February 20, 2021 #41 Share Posted February 20, 2021 A thread about asking the atheist a question, gets derailed by believers who have a problem with atheist. So it's not the atheist who (typically) are the problem, but the believers (typically). So my next bit of advice. Never hold onto a belief that you're unwilling to question. 3

By atheists I include all humans who choose to not at least entertain any interest in God. . I'm not an atheist, but I do not entertain any interest in God. There's lots of other deities and faiths too for folks to choose from, including the choice to not have a deity at all. And it's OK to not have a deity structure, that a human can be a good human without the deity requirement or a religion component to make that happen.

To be honest I very rarely think of things in a religious/atheistic framework. It's not something that pops up very often in my everyday life.
