Meatless school menu sparks political row

A decision by the Green mayor of Lyon, seen by many as the country’s culinary capital, to temporarily take meat off the menu in school canteens during the coronavirus pandemic has sparked a major political row in France.

Government ministers have accused the mayor, Grégory Doucet, of “ideological” and “elitist” behaviour after the measure, which is also being studied by several other cities including Paris, came into force in Lyon’s schools on Monday.

The city council has said the decision to provide the same meatless four-course lunch was purely practical, saying physical distancing rules necessitated more sittings in school canteens and it could not serve 29,000 children in two hours if there was a choice of meat and vegetarian menus.

Really, it is such a good idea! Red meat is generally recognised as unhealthy, ecologically damaging (in denuding rain forests and increasing methane production) and un-ethical (there have been awful reports on conditions in abattoirs and live transport).

Get youngsters used to the idea of meatless meals. I am quite old now, and was brought up on the idea that a "proper" meal had to have meat (meat and two veg, etc), I so wish more emphasis was placed on veggie diets when I was young.

Would those kids grow up to be midgets without some good old protein?

I would not be surprised if they tried to push the Beyond Meat products soon. The want for it seems to be growing.

Meat for lunch lol, all we used to get was a soggy vegemite sandwich and a squashed over ripe banana that had been cooking in your school case all day.

My school lunches were chilli con carne, chips and curry, chips and beans, etc.

And we used to get free whole milk.

Seriously, human beings have evolved to eat meat.

Hence our teeth, hence our short guts which arent designed to efficiently digest plant matter. Unlike a cow or a rabbit as examples.  I remember back in the 80s when it all started with vegetarianism as a fashion statement. Now they are removing meat off kids plates without even their consent or the consent of their parents.

Drink the milk its good for you. Eat the steak, and the chicken, and the pork, they are all healthy and nutritious. You cannot get the RDA of all vitamins and minerals off plant matter, the very fact people have to take vitamin B12 supplements to survive is an indication of a fad diet.

You may all be interested to know that veggies without vitamin B12 supplements have low lifespans. It is this group that actually has the highest risk of heart disease and stroke. Not the smokers, not the drinkers, not those who enjoy the greasy fry-ups and burgers. Vitamin B12 is needed or it results in higher inflammation.

You may also be interested to know that fat doesnt result in a release of insulin. Thats right, eating fat doesnt make you fat. Its sugar and carbs which are the main offenders. A bit with protein. They release the insulin resulting in your fat cells absorbing calories and getting bigger as a result.

You may also be interested to know the 5 a day advice comes from the optimum diet for mice. Not humans. In fact, if you do your research most plant pigments dont even survive through human stomach acid to be absorbed into the body.
