Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine cleared in US

Recommended Posts

Still Waters

US regulators have approved Johnson & Johnson's single-dose COVID jab, enabling millions more Americans to be vaccinated and setting the vaccine up for additional approvals around the world.

The J&J vaccine is the third authorised in the US following ones from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, both of which require two doses.

COVID-19 has claimed more than half a million lives in the US, and states are clamouring for more doses to stem cases, hospitalisations and deaths.

Authorities are telling people not to play a numbers game with the vaccine. It has a 72 percent effective rate but is still 85 percent effective against serious cases of Covid and 100 percent effective against hospitalization and death.

But federal and state health officials are concerned that even with strong data to support it, some people may perceive Johnson & Johnson’s shot as an inferior option.

The new vaccine’s 72 percent efficacy rate in the U.S. clinical trial site — a number scientists have celebrated — falls short of the roughly 95 percent rate found in studies testing the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. Across all trial sites, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine also showed 85 percent efficacy against severe forms of Covid-19 and 100 percent efficacy against hospitalization and death.

I'm not worried. I know a few people whoa re waiting for Johnson and Johnson because they don't trust the new method the other vaccines used. They want an older type of vaccine.

It seems silly to me but if that gets more people to get vaccinated than it's for the best.

The fact it's one and done will also move the appointment times along. No second appointment needed and more younger people will be cleared to take the shot. Everyone who wants the vaccine can be done by the end of July. That's the current thinking.

Drug company Merck has just announced it will team up with Johnson and Johnson to mass produce it's vaccine. This pushes up the vaccine goal as there will now be 100 million doses by the end of May. All US adults that want the vaccine should be able to get it by the end of May. There should actually be a surplus.

There is a pill being tested now that is showing promise. It is similar to Tamiflu and will stop the Covid virus from reproducing before the illness becomes serious.

That's interesting. Are they worried about the immune system response or is it due to not having that population of people texted enough with the vax?

There has not been a decision fully yet on MS for Johnson and Johnson so some doctors are in wait mode https://www.verywellhealth.com/covid-vaccine-multiple-sclerosis-5115252  I think its the fact MS effects the nerves etc. My mom already had her first shot from Moderna and she gets her second one the end of March.
