More than a dozen dead in crash

An SUV packed with people pulled out in front of a semitruck towing two trailers in a rural California county near the Mexican border on Tuesday morning, leaving at least a dozen dead and others hospitalized, officials said.

Overhead video in Imperial County shows the brutal aftermath of the crash, with the jack-knifed semitruck smashed into the left side of a Ford Expedition. Both came to a rest off the side of a rural road about 10 miles north of the border.

Hospital and police officials gave slightly different tallies of the injured and dead in the incident.

California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Omar Watson said at a morning briefing there were 25 occupants in the Expedition during the crash and that 13 died, including the driver.

and then

An Expedition is a "land yacht" but 25?  Apparently except for the front seats, the rest of the interior had been removed so more people could be packed in.

No seatbelts, the driver failed to stop, and the vehicle got T-boned by a huge truck.  It was such a senseless, avoidable loss of life.  I pray the families find peace.

One would think that the customs agents at the border should have not let them in with that many people in the vehicle to start with.

Did they enter the country illegally?       Sad case, but I have to think the other 24 passengers were a distraction to the driver.
