The Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has triggered a wave of revulsion by telling citizens to stop “whining” about a coronavirus outbreak that has killed more than 260,000 people.

The far-right populist made the inflammatory declaration on Thursday, as Brazil’s already dire Covid situation deteriorated and its average daily death toll rose above that of the United States.

“Stop all this fussing and whining. How long are you going to keep on crying?” Bolsonaro asked supporters in the midwestern state of Goiás, where nearly 9,000 people have died.

He sounds like an idiot.  Of course, that's if one assumes the press reports to be accurate.  If so, he probably needs to look for another career or retirement.  I noticed the article stressed his words but not their context.  He has a country to run and it sounds like millions are scared to go to work.  God help us if something as deadly as the 1918 H1N1 ever comes again.

The health system in Brazil is on the brink of collapse as pressures from the Covid pandemic show no sign of easing, according to the country’s leading public health research institution.

While other major nations are starting to see the benefit of Covid vaccination programmes and lockdowns, Brazil recorded a record 1,972 Covid-19 related deaths on Tuesday, adding to a toll of more than 268,000 and nearly 11 million confirmed cases since the global outbreak began.

Brazil saw over 4,000 deaths from Covid-19 on Tuesday alone, as the epidemic turns into what one expert calls a “biological Fukushima”.

Brazil’s exponential surge is set to surpass the numbers seen within the United States in January, when almost 80,000 people died from the disease.

"It’s a nuclear reactor that has set off a chain reaction and is out of control. It’s a biological Fukushima," said Miguel Nicolelis, a Brazilian doctor and professor at Duke University, who is closely tracking the virus.

Hunger worsens in city slums

The queue snakes around the block and each day it gets longer: hungry residents of Heliopolis, São Paulo's largest favela, waiting in line for the handout that will keep them going until the next morning.

They are given a bowl of pasta with meat and a portion of rice, two packets of biscuits and a carton of milk, shared between a whole household and usually their only meal of the day. Before the pandemic, 300 people would queue up here. Now it is over 1,000, and the charity that runs it has 650 others across São Paulo.

Think about something like Ebola... we are freakin lucky that it already didn't happen.
