Figures also reveal half of all jobs created since Labour took power are in the public service. there are fears that the state payroll explosion is crowding out jobs in the wealth-creating private sector. An Office of National Statistics` susvey shows gordon Brown`s employment boom is being funded by taxpayers. despite the chancellors Budget pledge to slash civil service numbers,861.231 jobs have been created there since 1997. The figure could hit 1 million by the end of this year-takingthe state payroll total way beyond its present 6.9 million. The number of doctors,nurses and police has leaped by 144.500. but this means more than 700.000 are working as penpushers and regulators ,says david Smith,chief economist for Williams de Broe.
