That depends on the number system you're using.  So if you're using binary (as computers do), the only options are zero and 1

1=0001

2=0010 

3=0011

4=0100

(etc)

1 + 1 = 10 in binary

Binary is the counting system that only allows the digits 1 and 0 to be used. So counting sheep in a field using binary would go like this:

1, 10, 11, 100, 101, 110, 111, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1100, 1101, 1111, 10000, .......

1 + 1 = 1 (when adding/mixing colours)

I colour + 1 colour = 1 colour

So long as the added colours are not the same they will produce another colour.

We all live in, and are used to, a denary (base ten) world and since each query/statement is fact-checked based on popular vote, the 'correct' answer is:

1 + 1 = 2
