The 'safest place' to live in the Milky Way found

Eldorado

Recommended Posts

Astronomers have searched the entire Milky Way to identify the safest places to live. It turns out, we're in a pretty good spot.

But if the past year has made you feel ready to relocate to another planet, you might want to look toward the center of the galaxy, according to the new research.

The new findings were made by a group of Italian astronomers, who studied locations where powerful cosmic explosions may have killed off life. These explosions, such as supernovas and gamma-ray bursts, spew high-energy particles and radiation that can shred DNA and kill life. By this logic, regions that are more hospitable to life will be the ones without frequent explosions, the astronomers reasoned.

Galactic habitability has long been understood as a balancing act, of sorts. More stars, more planets, so more terrestrial planets in the denser areas, toward the center. This is countered by the higher incidence of radiation events from such phenomena as supernovas, gamma ray bursts, and flare stars, in the same area of the galaxy.

Fewer, but safer planets, farther out, but  go too far out and the number of terrestrial planets dwindles sharply. The 'galactic habitable zone' is a compromise between these two considerations.

The novel inclusion of time-based considerations is interesting, here. It appears that our galaxy, as a whole, is becoming more hospitable, over the aeons.

Earth is about 8 kiloparsecs from the center of our galaxy. This is on the border between the calculated safest area up until 6 billion years ago, and the safest, over the past 4 billion years. Life on Earth appears to have started around  3 and a half billion years ago. We seem to have been fortunate time-wise, if slightly marginal, based on our location.

Two links in the OP.

Check it again.

For me, Earth is the best place to live. Sometimes I even think that scientists don't need to search for the best place to live because people will immediately turn it to the worst place. Look at our environment, look at what we do with out planet. Do you think that something will change in another one? I don't. Here we know how to deal with natiral disasters. There we don't, so it's better to stay on Earth while it's possible.
