Ogopogo is ours, indigenous Canadians say

Eldorado

Recommended Posts

People living on the shores of Okanagan Lake have long said that dark, curling waves signal the presence of Ogopogo, a monstrous serpent lurking beneath the surface.

A handful claim to have seen the long green body and horse-like head of Canada’s own Loch Ness monster.

They tell stories of a creature that once nearly killed a settler when it dragged his horse into the depths.

And every few years, new video footage renews excitement that Ogopogo has been found.

Indigenous residents tell a very different story: one of a scared water spirit whose identity has been warped by outsiders.

"Indigenous" people said it "the monster" was a make believe boogie man to keeps kids going into deep water,

However i do believe their are some large eels and sturgen in that lake,  both could look very creepy.

I do not understand why you lay the claim of "intellectual deceit" at the feet of Indigenous Peoples. I believe that they have much to teach us

I think the story belongs to anyone who wants it.

I think it is poppycock, but anyone who wants to use it, whether indigenous or not can have it.

I didn't read this to in depth.

Are the indigenous people wanting to claim rights to the "monster".   Profit from the sale of related items?

If they can claim Ogopogo, they can claim rights to the use of it's image.  And Ogopogo is used on all kinds of places/things in the Okanagan.  It is partly their heritage, but a lot if $$$, too.  Maybe the natives are tired of losing their culture and want to take it back.

The truth is... who cares? Ogopogo has only been monetised by Chancers, the land taken by Settlers... The Barnum and Baileys of the modern world want to claim ownership but the truth is nobody can own an aquatic creature.
