Hundreds of children are crossing the U.S.-Mexico border without their parents every day, with the number of minors in federal custody topping 18,000 by Thursday, according to federal data—a spike that’s left shelters and holding sites with virtually no extra capacity.

KEY FACTS

  • On Thursday, about 12,500 unaccompanied minors were in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, which offers shelter beds and works to place children with parents and other sponsors throughout the United States.
  • Another 5,500 were stuck with Customs and Border Protection, which often holds kids in makeshift facilities designed for adults—children are only supposed to stay with CBP for 72 hours per a court settlement, but some minors have reportedly stayed for longer.
  • Some 605 unaccompanied minors were caught by CBP Thursday, but just 388 were transferred from CBP, meaning the number of kids in Border Patrol custody is growing.

I had no idea it was that bad (thanks MSM)  Something has to be done.  That's much worse than it ever was during trump's administration.

and then

His handlers could simply revert back to Trump's agreements with Mexico's leaders and stop it cold.  I wouldn't hold my breath.  If some of those children escaped and told of the horrors they've experienced, it would be suppressed by media who've become complicit with the evil that's being done.  This nation is on its way down and they are cheering it on.

Many of those are holdovers from the Trump detention orders (500,000 of them, in fact) https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/10/30/500-000-kids-30-million-hours-trump-s-vast-expansion-of-child-detention

So the Biden administration entered with 500,000 (half a million) children detainees: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/11/04/immi-n04.html

They're trying to work through the mess, but it takes awhile to resolve 500,000 cases... and deal with new refugees asking for help.

This is a great example of another one of trumps countless blunders that others have to step up and fix, its easy for trumpers to try to make claims this wasnt trumps mess to start with, blaiming others is the go to for trump and his trumpettes.

Texas child welfare officials are investigating three reports that allege abuse and neglect at a San Antonio coliseum that is holding more than 1,600 migrant teenagers who crossed the southern border.

It is the first time state officials announced they are investigating such allegations at one of the emergency facilities the US government has quickly set up in Texas amid an increase in crossings of unaccompanied youths.

That was almost 500 thousand over 4 years. Not currently.

From your first link...

Quote

The detentions, which include both unaccompanied children and children with their families, peaked last year at over 300,000, with 40 percent held longer than the 72-hour limit set by a patchwork of legislation and a court settlement.

So it included families too, not just unescorted children. Apples and Oranges. But its true there were many that exceeded 72 hours, but almost all do now.

biden screwing up again.   In his defense he doesn't know what he is doing.

If there are lots of children there, biden will end up there.

So your first link, The Marshall Project seems like a good centrist source. But you completely read that wrong.  According to your article under trump around half a million children were processed over four years but what that article actually is reporting are approximate numbers of how many it took longer than the 72 hours that processing is supposed to take and I would in no way shape or form dispute that.  It was terrible.

Your second source, the World Socialist Website is rated as extreme bias toward the left https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/world-socialist-web-site/ I wouldn't give anything published there much credibility as it's clearly propaganda.

But this is not about trump's fiasco, which it was.  This is not about Obama building the detainment facilities during his record number of deportations.  This is about now.  There is no questioning the fact that there is a very large number of unaccompanied children coming across the border.  Many more than I was aware of from the sparse coverage of the broadcast news.  What I am aware of is this was turned over to kamala harris to deal with.  I wish her luck, I wonder when she starts?

They are doing their best to ensure he won't be the one responsible.  the task of fixing this was given to the VP.

Seriously.  You shouldn't post from that website.  It's similar to posting from infowars.

Maybe read the article.  Biden is mentioned one time at the very end.  This is not about some politician this is about an ongoing and now worsening human crisis.

Stats from US Border Protection:

In March 2021, CBP encountered more than 172,000 persons attempting entry along the Southwest border.

This total represented a 71 percent increase over February 2021.

The number of encounters at the border has been rising since April 2020 due to reasons which include violence, natural disasters, food insecurity, and poverty in Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of Central America.  This fiscal year CBP has already had over 569,800 encounters.

This represents an increase of 24 percent from the total encounters we had during all of Fiscal Year 2020, when migration was limited by the COVID-19 pandemic, and an increase of over 34 percent from approximately the same time frame of Fiscal Year 2019.

The majority of the encounters on the Southwest border remains single adults.

I do concede your point about bias in the sources -- they were what I found on a quick search.

And I admit that I was doing a "knee jerk" response on was the statement following the Forbes sniplet, "I had no idea that it was that bad."  I've been following the mess created by Trump from the beginning here in Texas (it seldom made the national news.) and occasionally donating to charities dealing with the kids being detained.  There wasn't much of an effort at processing them, and numbers kept increasing... along with the occasional child death, which really hit home with me.

So it's an emotional issue.

I agree that we're seeing an increase and also acknowledge that most of these children are being sent to family members who are already here in the States.  However, the absolute mess created by the previous administration is still here and still needs to be resolved, and I'm angry on behalf of the innocents.

That's why (in a different thread) my position has been that this is very predictable given the actions taken (or not) by the government.  The biden administrations priority on this should have been to build up a better infrastructure to deal with a greater number of people coming to America.  We also need to increase the numbers of immigrants we will accept to cut down on people coming here illegaly.

I do agree with every single statement, there, however he's only been in office for three months and the Republicans seem disinclined for much negotiation.  I think his first focus was on the pandemic and the economic crisis -- I'm giving him till July to start something about the border situation.

We may see some of that infrastructure addressed with the most recent infrastructure plan that's going into talks with both sides this coming week.  Both situations are going to be a hard sell, both in Congress and to the people.  Still, I'm hopeful.

I've been reading Obama's most recent book ("Promised Land") and it's actually a very good reference book for how negotiations in government happen and how slowly things can move and how situations can turn on minutiae.  I think that's why I'm willing to be a bit more patient on the things that I think need fixing in the country.

We are living in the most fascinating time since the 1960's, and some of what is going on has the same kind of feel as those days.

They are busing them around the US. At least 140 unaccompanied minors have been brought to my city to live in college dorms that have been abandoned for about twenty years. The rest of the college has been torn down. Without revealing where I am located...

The Baptiste Group is advertising for a host of positions at the site. All must be bilingual.

Posts include:

Licensed clinical professional counselor who "screens for human trafficking concerns" $29-$30 an hour

Licensed master social worker who also "screens for human trafficking concerns $29-$30 an hour

Lead clinician who screens for trauma and abuse including sexual abuse and human trafficking concerns, screens for harm to self or others $65,000 per year

Lead case manager $62,000 a year

Bilingual transporter $31,000 a year

There are also security guards, custodians, case managers, mental health clinicians, youth care workers, maintenance personnel, case aides and bilingual teachers.

The Biden administration has just pawned them off on other cities.

Likely she doesn't want the stigma on her career of fighting this losing battle for the Biden Administration.
