If the topic is just for sycophants, shouldn't that be made clear in the OP? I thought the aim of UM was to give a voice to all opinions.

Read the preceding post.  Hardly, the life of a freeloader.

Dude, how out of taste would it be you turning up at a funeral to bad mouth the dead person?

You might not have liked him but please show some respect. Save the negativity for another time.

'Turning up at his funeral'?! This is an online forum where, one would hope, all sides of a story can be told. Some people don't believe he deserves any respect. I just wish honesty wasn't stifled when the 'royal' family is the subject.

I would not have posted if I had known this was a book of condolences. I thought it was a discussion thread. I agree with ouija ouija, this should be made clear in the title.

It shouldn't have to be spelled out to folks to be respectful in a death announcement thread. Common decency and civilized behavior should already make it clear not do bash someone in their death announcement thread.

There will be other threads for other discussions I'm sure... but leave this one at respects.

The Monarchy is hugely controversial in the UK. Perhaps we should have another thread where people can be honest?

Point is, we're not talking about Joe Bloggs from two doors down here, we're talking about someone who has lived a life of ultimate luxury at the tax payer's expense.

Just keep in mind that about 90% of the British people will not give a toss about this. He was a sour, unfeeling bloke who didn't appreciate the privileged position he occupied. A freeloader.

I sense you are trying to say something, but it's not very clear.

Perhaps so if folks can have that discussion in another thread and keep their civil tongues and keep within the forum rules... it might even be constructive and eye-opening for some folks. But not this thread, since it is a death announcement thread.

Then as has been suggested, perhaps another thread could work for that sort of discussion.

Again, not here in this thread, since it's a death announcement thread.

THIS is what makes UM frustrating! It is the imposition of arbitrary gagging at discretion of mods, not the normal internet protocols.

Not all that arbitrary... the last couple of death announcements that have had folks bashing the dead have been monitored, and folks told to stop the bashing and leave it at respects. It's not just this thread or this person... it's a general decency thing in death announcement threads.

And gagging in this thread yes- it's part of what moderation is. But as you have suggested opening a different thread to discuss the controversies and been told that might be a good idea- you aren't being gagged in general.

Now, everyone needs to stop bickering and debating this, and comply with moderation. Do not further debate or disrespect the dead in this thread.

Being critical of the deceased is fine, don't disparage the memory.  The Monarchy is not all that obsolete as you might think.  It has only been replaced with Socialism.  Socialism is merely a monarchy minus the monarch.  We are no longer children.  We don’t need a guarding/Lord Protector of the Realm anymore.  Tyranny is obsolete.  But as an institution of the Commonwealth, it is a very precious jewel.  Hold onto it for as long as you can because it is your culture.  It is England.  The NHS is not England’s gift to the world, it is the history of the Kings.  Without it, this country would not exist (as well as many others).  I could be bias too as my ancestors originated (14th to 17th Centuries) from Repton and Chesterfield. I'll be honest, i don't know who he is or that he was still alive.   I've never been into the "Royals" like many people are.

Regardless of whether we are Royalists or not, can we all agree to spell Philip's name with one 'L'?

This has me wondering about Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.  Did the Queen send the Queen a telegram that day?

It was 19 years ago today that Queen Elizabeth buried her mother.

It sure is. I can only imagine how Queen Elizabeth II must feel today now also mourning the loss of her husband of 70 some years. She is a human being who has never to my knowledge put herself before her duty. My heart really feels for her. Let that poor woman grieve.

I've heard over the course of the day that a traditional funeral will not take place due to Coronavirus. Prince Philip will lay in state at Windsor Castle. The funeral will take place at St George's Chapel. Prince Philip had requested to be buried at Frogmore Gardens as it was a place dear to his heart. I think Queen Elizabeth will honor his wishes. Her parents and her sister are interred in St George's Chapel so his wishes to be near Windsor is within the family.

The Queen has requested that people donate money to charity rather than leave floral tributes. I think there are many people who will do both.

A woman has lost her husband, children a father, grand and great-grand children their grandfather.
For this, I respect their grief.
