Prince Philip has died, at age 99.

The South Pacific tribe that saw Prince Philip as a living god will likely turn to worship Prince Charles, a leading anthropologist has said.

A group of villagers on the tiny island of Tanna in the Vanuatu archipelago believe the Duke of Edinburgh had descended from their spiritual ancestors and worshipped him, praying that he would one day return to bring prosperity to the village.

As news of his passing reaches the island, they will respond with dances and ritual wailing, along with a ceremonial drink, said Kirk Huffman, an anthropologist who is familiar with what is known as the Prince Philip Movement.

Just keep in mind that about 90% of the British people will not give a toss about this. He was a sour, unfeeling bloke who didn't appreciate the privileged position he occupied. A freeloader.

Agree 100% with the first half but you underestimate him  in other respects , imho  .

He was far from sour -- a wicked , forthright sense of humour,   albeit with the benefit of hindsight , very much non PC in terms of today's whining culture .

He also did immense good which he did not have to ,  both for the young and in terms of industrial initiatives .

High IQ which he always tried to use positively ,  and a  caring man . But one who did not suffer fools . Period .

Royal Family shares Queen's moving golden wedding tribute to Duke of Edinburgh

The Royal Family has shared the Queen's moving golden wedding tribute to Prince Philip a day after his death.

In a tweet, the Royal Family posted a picture of the couple and the quote from 1997, saying: "He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know."

The Monarchy is hugely controversial in the UK. Perhaps we should have another thread where people can be honest?

Hugely controversial in your head.

To be fair, while the Royal Family may be losing some of it's relevance, Prince Philip has always been widely regarded, especially as his sense of humour has been acceptable to all classes and he has appeared down to earth. And no one can not feel sympathy for the Queen, who has lost a life-long partner as well as a support.

Not sure why you quote me as we share feelings almost exactly .

My separate reservations concern the Monarchy as an institution for the 21st century . But that is  now best left for other times .

I quoted you just because you said just about exactly what I was thinking! I think you have caught the majority mood just right!

According to a press release I saw today, Prince Philip will not be buried in Frogmore Gardens. Instead, he will be interred in the Royal Crypt in St George's Chapel. I can understand the Queen's desire to be interred with him and her family when her time comes.

No photo description available.

Boris Johnson will not attend Duke of Edinburgh's funeral and will give up seat for a family member.

It comes after Buckingham Palace revealed that only 30 people would be attending the duke's funeral, in an effort to follow COVID-compliant protocols.

Prince Philip's funeral will take place next Saturday at 3pm, with the public encouraged to watch on television and stay away from the area.

A full guest list for the funeral will be released next week, as plans are finalised.

At the funeral: by the time you include the organist, a reduced choir, the vicar, a cameraman, there aren't many seats left if they're sticking to covid rules.

It's the digital age, none of those are needed.  Music piped in, vicar on a screen and webcams filming it all.

"In a digital funeral, mourners log into a video chat on their phone or computer, and GatheringUs staff members moderate prayers, speeches, and musical numbers. They can even incorporate live footage from a cemetery or funeral home. In a digital reception, staffers act as virtual emcees, grouping participants in smaller video chats, similar to the way people naturally cluster at reception tables in real life — one hub for high school buddies, another for work friends. If anyone experiences technical difficulties, the team is ready to troubleshoot."

We're talking about a senior member of the royal family here. I am intrigued to know how they will balance the pomp and ceremony they, I'm sure, feel he deserves, with current covid rulings.

Prince Philip died on a significant day for the royal family: the 16th anniversary of his eldest son Prince Charles's wedding to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles officially tied the knot in a civil ceremony on April 9, 2005, at Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip’s final resting place

Following his funeral, the Duke of Edinburgh will be privately interred in the Royal Vault of St George’s Chapel – but this will not be his final resting place.

When the Queen dies, Philip will be transferred to the gothic church’s King George VI memorial chapel to lie alongside his devoted wife of 73 years.

The tiny chapel houses the remains of the Queen’s father George VI, her mother the Queen Mother and sister Princess Margaret.

A LABOUR councillor called Prince Philip a "fascist piece of inbred s***" minutes after his death was announced.

"Councillor Sarah Morton, who represents Labour in the Clubmoor ward of Liverpool, made the sickening remark on Facebook on Friday. She shared a news article announcing the Duke of Edinburgh's death and wrote: "Just a list of reasons why the world is a better place without this fascist piece of inbred sh** in it," reports Liverpool Echo.

The councillor added: "The Metro trying to wrap it up as funny 'gaffs' is next level bootlicker cringe."

But the comments have since been deleted and Cllr Morton has apologised for her actions."

The 6 non-royals Prince Philip chose to walk behind his coffin

At Philip's personal request, there will also be six non-royals accompanying Charles, Harry and Will on the day.

They are, according to HELLO!, all members of the late prince's household staff: his personal protection officer, his private secretary, two pages and two valets.

Prince Philip was reportedly very involved in planning his funeral and wanted minimal fuss. To respect his wishes, he will be given a ceremonial rather than a state funeral which is typically given for monarchs.

The mystery of Prince Philip’s coffin which was made for him many decades ago

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, will be laid to rest on Saturday in a coffin which was made for him over many decades ago.

The coffin is made from English oak and is lined with lead.

The exact circumstances surrounding the coffin’s construction remains a mystery, with there being no record of exactly when the funerary box was made.
