Brazil building new giant Christ statue, taller than Rio's

A giant new statue of Christ being constructed in southern Brazil will rise even higher than the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro.

A head and outstretched arms were added this week to the statue, which has been under construction since 2019 in the city of Encantado, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Completion of the monument is scheduled for late this year, according to the Association of the Friends of Christ, which is coordinating the work.

It sounds as if Brazil is not planning to welcome non-Christians anytime soon.

I wonder at the cost of this.
And whether that money shouldn't have been used for social programs and education instead...

I have no issue with the statue.   The tourism dollars will eventually pay back the cost.

A New Statue of Jesus Is the World’s Tallest—for Now

For nearly a century, Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer has overlooked Brazil’s capital city from Mount Corcovado. Arguably one of the most iconic statues in the world, the towering depiction of Jesus Christ immediately became a national symbol when it opened in 1931.

But now, a small Brazilian town has bested the statue with its own massive Jesus, CNN Travel’s Jack Guy, Vasco Cotovio, Rodrigo Pedroso, and Francesca Street report. One hundred forty-three feet in height, Cristo Protetor (Christ the Protector) was completed on April 22.

In a statement on the Cristo Protetor de Encantado's official website, AACristo says the statue was completed in late April, but a surrounding tourist complex is still in the works and won't be finished until early 2023.

An elevator inside the statue is also still to be installed, according to Brazil media. Once completed, the elevator will take visitors to a lookout point at the height of Christ's heart, rewarding them with spectacular hilltop views.

It's all fun and games until the statue comes to life and gets into a kaiju fight with one of those giant Hindu god statues.

If you use the greek variant of the name, then yes.
