NYPD's controversial facial recognition tool

Newly-released emails show New York police have been widely using the controversial Clearview AI facial recognition system—and making misleading statements about it.

The NYPD has previously downplayed its relationship with Clearview AI and its use of the company’s technology. But the emails show that the relationship between them was well developed, with a large number of police officers conducting a high volume of searches with the app and using them in real investigations. The NYPD has run over 5,100 searches with Clearview AI.

This is particularly problematic because stated policies limit the NYPD from creating an unsupervised repository of photos that facial recognition systems can reference, and restrict the use of facial recognition technology to a specific team.

The article didn't include numbers for the false positive rate but I recall them being significant.  Imagine being convicted due to the AI making a mistake.

If we could trust U.S. authorities not to abuse this tech., I would be all for it, but we can’t.

They haven’t earned our trust.

so FB can create such repository but nypd can not? lol

Maybe it's the "making misleading statements about it" that has irked some folk.
