Still Waters Posted April 21, 2021 #1 Share Posted April 21, 2021 A search for 53 people is underway after a submarine suddenly disappeared off the coast of Bali, the Indonesian Navy has confirmed. The submarine failed to report back with results of a training exercise while in waters in North Bali on Wednesday. Navy spokesman First Admiral Julius Widjojono said it had been taking part in a torpedo drill, but failed to relay results from the exercise as expected. The KRI Nanggala 402 submarine was built in Germany in 1981, and the 60m vessel has a cruising speed of 21.5 knots. https://www.ladbible.com/news/news-navy-submarine-in-indonesia-suddenly-disappears-sparking-search-20210421 https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/indonesian-navy-checking-submarine-after-failure-report-back-exercise-2021-04-21/

Myles Posted April 23, 2021 #7 Share Posted April 23, 2021 Very sad. It doesn't look good for any of the crew.
Jon the frog Posted April 23, 2021 #8 Share Posted April 23, 2021 Maybe they will find it in time, but getting to the crew in time is another thing... not sure what's better between dying fast or having survived the mishap and dying slowly in a steel coffin.
Eldorado Posted April 23, 2021 #9 Share Posted April 23, 2021 “The submarine’s oxygen reserve capacity in a blackout is 72 hours,” Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Yudo Margono told reporters. “There’s time until Saturday around 3am. Let’s hope we can find them before then.” However, defense analysts have said that the vessel could have broken into pieces if it sank to a depth as far down as 700m. Tapei Times An oil spill where the submarine was thought to have submerged early on Wednesday pointed to possible damage to its fuel tank, and fanned fears of a deadly disaster.
Eldorado Posted April 24, 2021 #10 Share Posted April 24, 2021 Indonesian rescue teams are fearing the worst as oxygen supplies on a missing Indonesian naval submarine are thought to have run out. There are fears the vessel carrying 53 crew may already have sunk to a depth where it might have been crushed. The KRI Nanggala 402 disappeared on Wednesday during exercises off the coast of Bali, sparking a frantic search to locate the stricken vessel. Australia, India, Malaysia and Singapore have so far sent assistance. And a US Navy P-8 Poseidon aircraft landed in Bali early on Saturday morning. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-56851487 1
Still Waters Posted April 24, 2021 Author #11 Share Posted April 24, 2021 Missing submarine ‘likely sunk,’ says Indonesia navy after items found Indonesia’s navy has recovered items from a missing submarine, suggesting the vessel it said was crewed by 53 people had sunk with no hope of finding survivors. The items found by rescuers included parts of a torpedo straightener, a grease bottle believed to be used to oil the periscope and prayer rugs from the submarine, according to navy chief Yudo Margono. “With the authentic evidence we found, believed to be from the submarine, we have now moved from the ‘sub miss’ phase to ‘sub sunk’,” Mr Margono told a press conference in Bali where the items were displayed. The announcement came shortly after oxygen aboard the vessel known as KRI Nanggala 402 was believed to have run out. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/missing-submarine-likely-sunk-says-091228793.html

+and-then Posted April 26, 2021 #16 Share Posted April 26, 2021 9 hours ago, Myles said: Must have been a horrific last moments for the crew. I'm sure it was horrific. It would be like being on an airliner going down and KNOWING you were about to die, only it could have taken several minutes or more to reach crush depth. At the moment the pressure hull collapsed, death would have been near instantaneous, or so they say. IMO submariners are a very special kind of courageous. I hope their families find peace.
