The Zulu royal family in South Africa has announced the death of its monarch Queen Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu just a month after she became regent.

Queen Mantfombi, 65, became interim leader of the country's largest ethnic group last month after the death of her husband, King Goodwill Zwelithini.

The queen's prime minister said her death had taken the family by surprise and they were "utterly bereft".

He has dismissed rumours that the queen had been poisoned.

A successor as ruler of the 11 million-strong nation has not yet been named.

Prince Misizulu named next Zulu king amid family feud

The eldest son of South Africa's late Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been chosen as successor to the throne, amid a bitter family feud.

Prince Misizulu, 46, was named in the will of Zulu Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu - his mother - who died unexpectedly last week.

There were dramatic scenes as the will was read out, with some family members openly voicing their disapproval.

Prince Misizulu had to be led away from the meeting by armed security.

The reading took place at the KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace on Friday evening, and was televised.
