Biden bans most travel to U.S. from India to limit COVID-19 spread

Quote

U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday imposed new travel restrictions on India in light of the COVID-19 epidemic, barring most non-U.S. citizens from entering the United States.

The new restrictions, which take effect on Tuesday, May 4 at 12:01 am ET (0401 GMT), are on the advice of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and were imposed because "the magnitude and scope of the COVID-19 pandemic" in India was "surging," the White House said.

Biden on Friday signed a proclamation implementing the restrictions, which were first reported by Reuters.

The proclamation said India "accounts for over one-third of new global cases" and added that "proactive measures are required to protect the nation's public health from travelers entering the United States" from India.

I just hope he also lit a fire under those who were tasked, eventually, with helping supply Oxygen to the suffering in India.  I know a little about struggling to breathe and it is a horrible thing to experience.

I was just reading that some experts say such a ban will have little effect on US case numbers.

CNBC: Dr. Scott Gottlieb says travel restrictions on India will have little impact on U.S. Covid cases.

"Will it have an impact? Perhaps a minor impact on the margins in terms of reducing introductions. It's not going to dramatically affect our trajectory at this point," the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner said on "Closing Bell."  "It's probably going to do more harm to India than any good that it attributes to us."

We'd better prevent free travel within the US also then. Travel within spreads it faster then any traveling to and from India, yes?

The White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, said the policy would go into effect on Tuesday. The travel restrictions will not apply to citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States, their spouses or minor children or siblings, or to the parents of citizens or lawful permanent residents who are under 21.

Now where have we seen this before?

Answer... In the widely mocked ban put on China by Trump. I believe the arguement was are they expecting the virus to respect nationality and citizenship?

We'll have to see if Biden's ban is any more effective then Trump's, given they have the same flaws.

Travel times dont matter. 5hrs or 20 hrs, the resukt is the same: spread or the option for.

We missed our effective window to do that.  Americans probably wouldn't go for the China style lockdowns regardless.

Our Death Toll difference reflects that: China COVID: 90,671 Cases and 4,636 Deaths - Worldometer (worldometers.info)

United States COVID: 33,111,880 Cases and 590,153 Deaths - Worldometer (worldometers.info)

Its not about the political system of a country, its about the intelligence of the leaderhship of a country. The dictatorial government managed it well and the democratic one, in this case the US, failed. Because the (democratic elected) moronic head guy promised the virus will vanish when its getting warmer and has asked about the option to inject infectant as a treatment against C19.

Thats true as it is, but didn't the CDC and WHO, at the time both also down play the virus, as did the Congresd led by Pelosi? And didn't several European nations also get slammed?

Afterthought is always 20/20.

The main difference between Trump and the early CDC is that Trump disparaged masks. Which seems now to be the primary variable in spreading the virus. And Trump should own that. But as to his other actions, he was in line with the experts in Feb, March, April. After that he deviated on his own course, but the states were all firmly in charge by then.

As to the disinfectant thing, didn't Trump say, "Something like a disinfectant..."? But yes, he should own that. I did read that people who disinfected their groceries, many didn't do themselves any favors, as many used chemicals that are toxic if injested in a noticeable amount. These are the same people, in general, who mocked Trump about injecting poison. When they were eating the same poisons.

According to an online surveyTrusted Source conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in May, almost 40 percent of people had misused cleaning products.

And 25 percent reported “an adverse health effect that they believed was a result” of the products in an effort to avoid COVID-19.

Ugghh... wait... I mean... YES! YES! This is very much the most intelligent thing to do because President Biden repeated it off a piece of paper from his handlers.

No hypocrisy to see here, move along everyone. And don't forget to vote Democrat in 2002, because we'll give you more Stimulous checks.

Of course it will, because we have much stricter processes within the US than we did in early 2020.

That's exactly the point. People said Trump's ban was a farce, because he allowed ill Americans to return. But doesn't the Biden ban have the same flaw? If we allow US Citizens to return, might one of the mutant strains get in that otherwise would not have?

Several island nations did an extraordinary good job of prevention, but then they are islands with very limited points of access.

Well, if all returning citizens go into quarantine, that mitigates the risk.  How were returning citizens managed.

But we also have a years worth of knowledge under our belt.  A year ago, we didn't.

Before the the pandemic, one of our award winning science communicators said there were estimate it could cost "the economy" 250 billion; so, in his opinion would be to throw a billion dollars at the problem to allow the science graduate baristas to use their education to help solve the problem and free up vacancies in the service industries.  Spend a billion to save 250 was the equation.

It's a sound economic strategy to be more risk averse when so much is uncertain.

Those are both true.

I guess the response is, is it better to quarrentine on the India end, or the US end?

I believe Australia and New Zealand have very good Covid19 records, and both are blocking any people returning from India.
