Where is the North magnetic pole?

janesix

Question

Where is the North Magnetic Pole?

I am getting different answers from seemingly reliable (and unknown-reliable) sources.

Some say it is near the North Geographic Pole, and some say it is at the South Geographic Pole.

Please help me fact-check this.

It's nearly 10° off the Geographical North Pole.

It moves slightly with time, but not much.

What we call North is the magnetic South, this is because the North of a compass/magnet is attracted to the magnetic South.

What you're talking about is polarity, not the Northern location of a magnetic pole.

There are two ways to look at it, but I think the OP means the magnetic pole in the north.

This begs the question: then where is the South Pole? North or South?

Based on the current WMM model, the 2020 location of the north magnetic pole is 86.50°N and 164.04°E and the south magnetic pole is 64.07°S and 135.88°E.

That's why all military-type topographic maps have a "declination diagram".  The difference between Grid north and magnetic north can vary quite a bit.

So there are 15 poles?

Quote

- There are 11 poles at the ends of the Earth - two geographic poles, two magnetic poles, two geo-magnetic poles, two poles of inaccessibility, two celestial poles and a ceremonial south pole. Correction: Actually, there are 15 poles: two geographic poles, two magnetic poles, two geo-magnetic poles, two celestial poles and a Ceremonial South Pole, two cartographical poles and four poles of inaccessibility: Northern, Southern, Oceanic and Continental.

The Earth is one big magnet. The Magnetic North Pole (also known as the North Dip Pole) is a point on Ellesmere Island in Northern Canada where the northern lines of attraction enter the Earth.

Very interesting that you bring this up. Some people are claiming this confusion is a MANDELA EFFECT. It has changed for some!

If Interested, here's a video with an introduction.

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=north+magnetic+pole+mandela+effect&docid=608004031599297348&mid=1D5778EB787380AF2F401D5778EB787380AF2F40&view=detail&FORM=VIRE

I do seem to remember a land mass as in the video but I am not confidant enough to call Mandela Effect on this.

@janesix   Now, I don't know but could this tie in with your reliable sources giving different answers? Two versions of reality intertwining???
