John Bercow, defects from 'xenophobic' Tories to Labour

Recommended Posts

Eldorado

John Bercow, the former Conservative MP who became the scourge of Brexiteers as Commons Speaker, says he has switched allegiances to join the Labour Party.

Mr Bercow said he regards the Tories under Boris Johnson as “reactionary, populist, nationalistic and sometimes even xenophobic”.

Having stepped down as Speaker in 2019, he announced on Saturday that he joined Labour in recent weeks.

“I am motivated by support for equality, social justice and internationalism. That is the Labour brand,” he told the Observer.

“The conclusion I have reached is that this Government needs to be replaced."

A lot of us will miss him. He is spot on: the Tories under Boris Johnson as “reactionary, populist, nationalistic and sometimes even xenophobic”.

In this case I think we can use the lefts 'Tony Blair get-out clause' & say he was never a true Tory, he was a 'red Tory'

So he's going to leave the xenophobic Tories & join the anti-semitic Labour party.....they are welcome to the poison dwarf, he'll fit in nicely.

I can still remember him with a super sized ego on Sky News.

I wonder if thats where all the nutrients went? You know, instead of his body going to the ego part of his brain. Still, when he was sat there all smug and confident of the British people voting to stay in the EU and then found out we voted to leave the look on his face was priceless.

What an evening for him, having to sit there on Sky News all night long looking like he would blubber at any second lmao.

Still seething over not ascending to the lords I see.

Marvelous.

Strange how he would have been very happy to be a Tory and a Tory Lord before it became obvious he was not going to be a Tory Lord and wearing the ermine.  ;)

I think he wants to be leader of the Labour party. He sees that as feasible.

He is an absolute rear end.  I had the misfortune of meeting him when he was speaker and I took members of the U.K. youth parliament to debate in the chamber, very self obsessed.  The time the young people had was very limited and he spent over 30 minutes talking at the start mostly about himself.

I have heard other things as well from a family member who was a freelance producer who worked with him on a political piece.  I won’t go into details because I can’t verify any of what she said, but none of it was positive.

Sounds like he's proper Labour material.

John Bercow lobbied Jeremy Corbyn for peerage and even wrote his own reference!

John Bercow lobbied Jeremy Corbyn to secure a peerage and wrote his own reference for his nomination, leaked emails have revealed.

The former Speaker secretly met the then Labour leader’s team in the week after the 2019 general election to discuss his nomination to the House of Lords after being snubbed by Downing Street.

In emails seen by The Times, Bercow told Corbyn’s office how he was “hugely appreciative of Jeremy’s willingness to nominate me on behalf of the Opposition. I know you must be inundated with work at present. However, I should be grateful if you would let me know as and when my nominated [sic] has been formally submitted.”

He even reportedly wrote his own reference, highlighting his experience as a tennis coach, his brief role as deputy leader of the Conservative group at Lambeth Council and boasting about his four honorary degrees.
