Ex-cops jailed for beating porcupines to death while on duty

Two former US cops have been sentenced to time behind bars and slapped with a four-figure fine after they killed almost a dozen porcupines.

Addison Cox, 28, and Michael Rolerson, 31, admitted to beating 11 of the animals with their batons while on duty for the Rockland Maine Police Department in June last year.

Rolerson was sentenced to 270 days in jail with 20 days suspended, while Cox got 90 days with 10 days suspended, the Bangor Daily News reports.

Both men were also each handed a $1,000 (around £730) fine and ordered to carry out community service.

I see they were Maine cops. I was wondering where they ever found 11 porcupines. They were wild but that's still a large number to just go into the woods and find. I didn't think they were that easy to hunt down.

I was thinking the same thing. I haven't seen that many porcupines in my life unless you count dead ones.

They're rather slow animals. Nothing except a fisher or martin is going to mess with them so they don't have to move very fast.

Could they have been called to a job where they found the porcupines?
