Capital rioter 'Qanon Shamon' negotiating plea due to mental illness diagnosis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The participant in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riots nicknamed the "QAnon Shaman" is negotiating a possible plea deal with prosecutors, after prison psychologists found he suffers from a variety of mental illnesses, his attorney said.

In an interview, defense lawyer Albert Watkins said that officials at the federal Bureau of Prisons, or BOP, have diagnosed his client Jacob Chansley with transient schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety.

Why this is believable to me

Quote

He said Chansley's 2006 mental health records from his time in the U.S. Navy show a similar diagnosis to the BOP's.

This guys clever. Now he claims to be mentally ill?

He was the mastermind behind the almost successful coup attempt to overthrow the government. Basically he is like Bin Laden. Worst day since 9/11

I hope they  make sure he gets the health care he needs and don't just let him loose to fend for himself.

Some differences:

9/11 was a terrorist attack by an outside group on ALL of the citizens of the USA. They made it clear that they were OK with killing non-combatants, women, and children because they thought all Americans were guilty.

The summer riots were internal, one group of Americans against another.  Some thought they were being treated unfairly and not receiving the same protection under the law that all Americans are guaranteed.  All Americans have a 1A right to present grievances for redress.  NO American has a right to destroy public or private property or assault other citizens or authorities.   Violators need to be apprehended and charged as criminals, looters and arsonists.  You may argue that the cops should have opened fire on the rioting crowd instead of trying to contain them.  There are ways police could have responded better to contain violence. Hopefully it is a learning experience incorporated in future training.

Jan. 6 was not almost successful.  It was a group of Karens and Kens inspired by their leader to try to disrupt the Constitutional process of the election certification because they did not like the outcome.  That is an assault on the Constitution of the United States as well as elected representatives. It does seem typical Ken and Karen behavior that supporters and participants of this event look for every opportunity to deny, blame somebody else or weasel out.  Taking personal responsibility for actions is not a characteristic of this group, any more than other run of the mill thugs.

Yeah. People for some reason have an idea the criminal institutions for insane people are comfy and easier than regular prison.

But it's honestly probably worse

good strategy  ;)

he'll stay behind bars for several years, then political winds will change, he'll claim racism, impartiality, Will show how looters, arsonist were not even charged,  gets an acquittal,  runs for an office, wins, ( by that time mental illness  will not be disqualifier, it will be trending ), but he'll be a liberal socialist, cuz he is an opportunist, not a leader or creator.  he is an effing psycho., lol

Hey buddy? Here is why its so bad. American citizens did this, they tried to overthrow our government because they didn't like democracy telling their God king to **** off.

They did it for baseless conspiracies and where totally fine with destroying the republic if it meant they won.

That is not who we are. That's who 1930s Germany was and we all know how that day at the beer hall eventually ended.

To be fair, the American bison isn't entitled to rights under the constitution. His best hope is to be put into a breeding program on a ranch as part of witness protection.

Yeah, it ended with everyone in prison.
Scarily enough .. it’s where quite a few of these stroll in patriots are off to as well, because we know what happened to the Putsch’s figurehead while in prison.... and he was only a figurehead at that stage, the real power brokers were mysteriously enough not arrested.

It's another case of natural selection, the bind follow the blind and the uneducated followed Trumps instructions and went to the Capital on 6 Jan 2021.

For the parents and families of children with BPD it is impossible to get support or help in diagnosis.  You know your child needs help, you suspect it's  Bipolar or similar, and next, what do you do?

Try telling someone you think your child is Bipolar and look at how supportive they are.

This man's Mother may well be over the moon at this diagnosis.

Just pointing out something positive I believe may have come from this event.

If he is mentally unwell, and it did lead him to commit actions he otherwise wouldn't have, I say let him go, but put him in a care facility to get him help.

I don't believe he is mentally unwell, I believe he is he doing nothing but furthering the same Game he was playing during the Insurrection. He is a attention seeker and nothing more, the only reason it has come to this mental defense is because he doesn't have anything else left to use. He is a perfect example of those who will follow someone blindly without using their brain  for it's intended purpose to think.

This also goes for all the others who blindly followed their leader to the Capital on 6 Jan 2021, hopefully this has been a wake up call for all of them. But, I won't hold my breath, because doing so could be hazardous to my health!

Well according to the link in the OP if he found incompetent to stand trail at this time the following are the Federal Procedures that will take over at that time, according to Federal Law. So either way he will still stand trial so he will not get away with his misbehavior and criminal activities.

Below is what happens to Federal Prisoners who are incompetent to stand trial!

However, if a judge declares there is a preponderance of evidence to show a defendant is incompetent to stand trial, then the defendant is jailed because federal law requires inmates undergoing competency restoration treatment to be committed to a federal prison hospital.

There are only three federal prison hospitals offering restoration treatment for male inmates, and the average wait time for a bed this year for men has been 84 days, according to BOP data.

Sounds reasonable.

His attorney has been outspoken about his mental state for a while. You'll see why I didn't quote him, if you read it.
