First casualties from Iranian attacks on ships

Seems the first casualties from Iran targeting Israeli ships has finally occured.

The ship, Mercer Street, was attacked Thursday night about 185 miles away from the Oman capital and two crew members died from the attack.  The one crew member was a UK national and the other a Romanian national.  The attack was done by a drone it seems and Iranian media is saying it was done by the resistance in retaliation for Israel bombing an airfield in Syria last week.

The Mercer Street is an oil tanker operating for Zodiac Maritime, an Israeli company based in London.  The owner of the ship itself seems to be someone from Japan.

So far Israel is looking at this as a major terror attack and is looking at retaliation options.  Meanwhile the UK is investigating this incident along with an incident from a few days ago seemingly involving a failed attack on a Saudi owned cargo ship.

I imagine they already have a target package waiting to go.  Tit for tat and it's about to be a bad day to be Iranian for a few folks...

I expect Biden will get the U.S. involved just to prove that he has everything under control.

Thread cleaned due to personal bickering

The question of whether or not Iran was responsible for the attack still appears to be up in the air.

Quote

There were varying explanations for what happened to the Mercer Street, a Liberian-flagged, Japanese-owned ship, with Israeli-owned Zodiac Maritime describing the incident as "suspected piracy" and a source at the Oman Maritime Security Center as an accident that occurred outside Omani territorial waters.

U.S. and European sources familiar with intelligence reporting said Iran was their leading suspect for the incident, which a U.S. defense official said appeared to have been carried out by a drone, but stressed their governments were seeking conclusive evidence.

Israel is now calling for the UN to take action against Iran for the attack on the oil tanker.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/lapid-calls-for-un-action-against-iran-after-deadly-attack-on-ship/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

While not confirmed yet as the mechanism of the attack it seems multiple Iranian suicide drones were used during the attack and they targeted the living quarters of the crew, heard atleast one account of a suicide drone targeting the bridge.

Also heard rumors that drone fragments have been recovered that match a known Iranian kamikaze drone.

More concerning is the Israeli foreign minister speaking with the UK foreign minister and mentioning how there needs to be a harsh response to the attack.

Romania has announced Iran was behind the attack and vowed a response.  Iran is threatening that they will retaliate if there is any response to the drone attack.

Speculation is Israel and maybe UK will do something on August 3rd or 4th as the new Iranian president is sworn in August 3rd.  Starting to hear that Iran's air defense has been put on high alert.

No one seems to be taking the threat seriously, seems to be the basic rhetoric, crushing blow, making it a day of American/Israeli grieving, ect.  Really just the standard Iranian threat.  But I do think Israel is going to act in the next 48 hours in some form.

If there is truly going to be a reaction that DC is taking part in then I think the Iranians don't have much to worry about.  I saw a piece where Netanyahu said Israel should refuse to allow DC to temper Israel's actions.

I saw that also.

I dong think America, UK, or Romania are going to do anything significant to Iran.  They might do a cyber attack, probably put sanctions on various IRGC and political leaders, and probably push a meaningless UN resolution.

Israel on the other hand I think will do something a bit more serious.

The UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization) is reporting a non-piracy incident off the coast of the UAE, seems to be the reported incident is a hijacking that is currently underway.

Seems the UK government is operating under the assumption it is IRGC or Iranian proxy forces involved in the hijacking.  Reports seem to be suggesting 8 to 9 armed individuals involved in this hijacking.

The whole, "take hostages" bit is apparently their go-to.  Thugs.  Some nation needs to create a target they cannot ignore then capture a group of these "commandos" and put them on trial in an international setting.  Or... just hang them from the superstructure.

The hijackers have demanded that the hijacked ship sail for Iran, meanwhile the Iranian government is denying any involvement with the hijacking as is expected.

The UK and American naval forces in the area are monitoring the situation while the Oman navy is currently directly involved.

From ship tracking the hijacked ship seems to be moving now and it does seem to be moving in the direction of Iran but there is still a lot of time for it to change course.

A group of IRGC killed or captured from a hijacking would send a powerful message to Iran.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea, get a tanker, make it look full (put empty containers on the ship) fill them with a **** load of marines and let them board. Would be interesting to say the least. :D

According to the British navy the hijacking of the ship Asphalt Princess has ended with the hijackers leaving the ship.  There are no real details about what occured just a message from the British navy saying "incident [is] complete".

https://www.timesofisrael.com/hijackers-have-left-vessel-in-gulf-of-oman-british-navy-group-says/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

No real idea what to make of the situation.  From earlier reports the American navy apparently sent a ship to monitor the Asphalt Princess, from recent civilian radar data it seems an American super stallion helicopter and a French maritime patrol aircraft, no idea why the French suddenly decided to get involved at this particular time, have been flying around the previously hijacked ship.  No idea what the Oman navy was doing but from earlier reports they have been involved since the start.

Basically got a ship no longer hijacked, a cryptic message from the British, and various military assets from multiple countries watching or being actively involved in way that have never actually been explained.  Hopefully in a few hours it will become clearer what happened.

Yes that would be a great idea, it would show in a New York minute why the Country has the name I-Ran, because if that plan worked those idiots would pinch a loaf while trying running across water in their attempt to gat escape!!:tsu:

Peace my friend and thanks for the laugh!

Reports are starting to making it out on what happened yesterday.

It seems that a group of armed Iranians boarded the ship with the intention to make it sail to Iran.  After being boarded the crew was somehow able to sabotage the engines of the ship.  The group of armed Iranians apparantly fled after Omani and American warships showed up to secure the Asphalt Princess.

Have they evidence it was Iranian or is it still at the speculation stage?

Israel, UK, Romania, America, and NATO has released statements saying it was Iran, with Israel, UK, and Romania saying they will respond against Iran.

Earlier today Israel released the names of the Iranian commanders they believe are responsible for the drone attack.

While unconfirmed there were rumors online that drone parts were recovered that match a known Iranian suicide drone model.  Israel has presented evidence to the UK and America and shortly after they have each blamed Iran for the attack but the evidence itself seems to still be classified.

It happens, but ya the captain of the Mercer Street was a Romanian and sadly died in the attack.  The UK citizen killed seems to of been a part of the ship's security.
