Thanks acute.

So, Betty and Barney Hill invented accidentally 1961 the modern alien abduction phenomenon.

It goes back a bit before the Hills, though their account is probably the first popularized one. It could be argued that George Adamski really set the stage for the modern abduction scenario in the 50's. viewcontent.cgi?article=1002&context=soc

In my mind the first alien abductions were reported throughout much of history in incidents such as when people reported to have been taken by fairies, maybe even when Muhammed was taken by an Angel to see the rock in Jerusalem, etc.

Hmm.... wasn’t there a Stapledon story about a man being ‘taken’ by an alien to see the cosmos?

Enoch, Ezekiel and possibly the Wondjina. There are a lot of myths telling of sky gods from different cultures throughout time. We need to view all of them, past and recently present day, with a fair amount of skepticism yet not discount them altogether.

I could find no reports of alien abductions before the 1900s but this article mentions an attempted abduction reported in 1897 of a Colonel and his friend.   They were approached by three tall slender humanoids whose bodies were covered with soft downy hair, but the Colonel and friend were able to fight them off.

Discounting these myths does not cause any harm since it's impossible to gain any knowledge from them.
