York Minster to get statue of The Queen after councillors give plans the green light

Plans for a statue of The Queen to be installed at York Minster have been approved by the council, which says the sculpture will “enhance” the cathedral.

But City of York Council has asked to see the final design of the statue, once it has been selected by The Queen.

York Minster applied for planning permission to install the sculpture in an empty niche, or recess, at the west front of the Minster to mark the Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The statue was described in the proposals as a “symbol of hope” in the aftermath of the pandemic.

I don't blame them, after the statues of Mary Shelly and Diana. Otherwise they could end up with a naked Mother Theresa.

York Minster unveils Queen's jubilee statue design

A new statue of the Queen will stand "proud and resolute" at York Minster, the designer has said.

Richard Bossons, part of the cathedral's masonry team, said the design would complement the medieval facade of the 800-year-old building.

The 6ft 7in (2m) tall statue, weighing almost two tonnes, will sit in an empty niche on the minster's west front.

It will be installed in 2022 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne.

The King has unveiled a statue to his "beloved" mother in York, the first to be installed since her death.

The 6ft 7in (2m) sculpture was designed to celebrate the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee and was completed in August, the month before she died.

Speaking in front of crowds at York Minster, King Charles said her effigy would "watch over" the city.

The King was presented with a maquette of the statue after a service inside the cathedral.
