Canary Wharf locals were left perplexed last night by a mysterious flashing light that appeared to be coming from below the River Thames.

Posting in a Facebook group for Canary Wharf and Isle of Dogs residents on Sunday (August 15), Juliana Asayevich shared a video of the river asking residents what the flashing light could be.

Could be a stolen and thrown traffic beacon (they are usually waterproof), could even just be a LED flashlight wrapped up in some plastic.  I wonder if this will start a craze, when people realise how easy it is to do....

One LED torch or flasher kit and battery - $5

One plastic bag and some waterproof tape (or a tupperware container) - $3

One stone to weigh it down - Free

End result? - well, not exactly priceless, but could go seriously viral....

Jeez, is the water too toxic for someone to dive in and see what it is?

There's no need for a stone or brick.

Just power it with a 996 lantern battery:

That's what whoever put it there wanted someone to do.  Someone's gone to fetch a borescope.

It is exactly as foretold by Nostradamus in his famous quatrain #947, which, when professionally translated, reads:

"beware the yellow-feathered swimming bird, who will communicate over immense distances with a light that doth flash and yet is beneath the waves - it portends an apocalyptic armageddon of heretofore undreamt-of proportions"

.. better get the washing in.

That's not submerged - nope, definitely not submerged.  The Thames is approximately 37 per cent water and 46 percent brown or something.

It's light reflecting from above.

The water in the River Thames is drinkable.

You'll die, but you can drink it.

Definitely not a hazard light, it's the wrong colour (would be yellow/amber or red for hazard light).
I'm not sure exactly how deep the Themes is but this does not seem to be lying on the bottom of the river either.

Not that I think this is worth spending much time trying to analyse, but:

1. No, it's doesn't act like a reflection - note all the little ripples around it - it should be distorted.

2. Hmmmmm.  It looks very, very similar to the lights way across the other side of the river, in terms of color, brightness, size, shape and even the fuzziness of it's edges.....

Just sayin'.. apart from being to explain it with a simple device, it also would be very easy to fake.  Surely by now many folks have visited that spot and more footage is around....?

(yawn) I can't be bothered looking it up...
