An adorable baby southern white rhino has been born at Whipsnade Zoo after a 16-month pregnancy.

The female rhino calf, named Nandi by zookeepers, which means 'sweet one' in Zulu, was born at 4am on Saturday (August 21) at the zoo near Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

Southern white rhinos are the world’s second-largest land mammal.

According to the IUCN Red List for Threatened Species, there are approximately 10,000 Southern white rhinos left in the wild, and their numbers are decreasing due to poaching, habitat loss, the introduction of invasive species and climate change.
