I don't think he gets it. Socialist businesses function in a capitalist economy, even in socialist countries. They must compete with other companies, whether socialist or capitalist. If they don't compete, they go out of business. That produces a variety of products for the market, among which people can choose. Compare that with what we have now: government subsidized businesses "too big to fail." Allowing big banks to fail would be painful in the short run, but better for all of us in the long run. The government subsidizes wind and solar energy, but it also subsidizes coal, oil and nuclear energy. It subsidizes your food through price supports and allotments on grain. It subsidized your meat by exempting meat packers from covid restrictions last spring and by not permitting strikes in meat-processing plants. It subsidizes timber prices by selling USFS sales at lower-than-market prices, some even below-cost. It subsidizes recreation with free camping in the National Forests. It subsidizes highways and schools and dozens of other things we use daily. All that is socialism (or even communism, as in the case of TVA, Columbia River Authority and the US Forest Service). I'm not saying all these are bad. Most could operate just fine whether under a socialist or a capitalist system. What is the big difference between the US economy and most others: the last time our infrastructure was destroyed by war was 1865. Most other countries have had to rebuild their economies multiple times since then. Doug Your mistake is assuming that what we have is a government which supports a free market What we have, as you basically observe is a government that props businesses up that should fail and that licenses small monopolies. This model, like socialism, is not supported by Friedman. Edited September 9, 2021 by OverSword

Doug Quote Bernie Sanders has long referred to himself as a socialist rather than a member of the Democratic Party, which has naturally led to a lot of questions about what socialism means to him. He consistently references the social models of the Nordic states — especially Denmark — as his idea of what democratic socialism is all about. But in a speech Friday evening at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that while he's flattered to see Denmark discussed in a widely watched US presidential debate he doesn't think the socialist shoe fits. "I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism," he said. "Therefore, I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy." In Rasmussen's view, "The Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security to its citizens, but it is also a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish." https://www.vox.com/2015/10/31/9650030/denmark-prime-minister-bernie-sanders Bernie promotes Scandinavia as the model for his Socialist platform. However, the “Nordic Model” does not reflect Bernie’s tax-the-rich scheme (the 1% and the billionaires). The “Nordic Model” has a very high tax rate that is a disproportionate burden on the people who make the least. The brand of tax-the-rich Socialism Bernie promotes is the kind of socialism they have in Venezuela. Thats par-for-the-course for Sanders the schmuck. He stopped referring to the “1%” and switched to saying it’s “billionaires” who need to pay more taxes because someone smarter than him crunched the numbers and discovered Bernie “500K-summer-home” Sanders was part of the “1%” himself. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/15/us/politics/bernie-sanders-taxes.html

All I know is when I moved to the Portland area in 1999, it was clean, there was less crime, and there were never any riots, that I knew of. Of course it was run by Democrats then, but moderate Democrats. Today every road us lined with trash, regardless of if there are tents or not. The far left is running the city into the ground. "Racist" people who don't want trash everywhere, and drunks pooping in their yards, are moving out. Place will be like Detroit eventually, with areas of urban wilderness where no one lives or works. I'm not sure what the fix is, but I think a move back toward moderates running the city just might help.

Social democracy with lightly regulated trade is not socialism. Quote so·cial·ism /ˈsōSHəˌlizəm/ noun a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. And then once that's accomplished the next inevitable step Quote com·mu·nism /ˈkämyəˌnizəm/ noun a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.
