US Open: 'Exceptional talent' Emma Raducanu living 'every 18-year-old's dream'

I'm not a huge tennis fan. In fact my interest in sport in general has been in decline over the last few years, as it becomes increasingly monetized and politicized.

Can't help having bit of national pride at Emma Raducanu though. Hugely talented, a mere 18 years old, and breaking records all over the place to reach the final of the US Open.

Best of luck later today Emma!

Going up against the plucky 19 yr old Canadian. I don't fancy her chances. But then, I'm very biased.

She's a Canadian immigrant to the UK of east European (Romanian) and Chinese extraction. Her and her parents are fine examples of the contribution that immigrants make to the UK, and while the UK can laud her personal achievements and bask in her glory  the Brexiteers scapegoat immigrants. I wonder how she feels about that?

Either way, they're both Canadian born.

I think she was only two when we kidnapped her, so she definitely puts the UK in CanUcK!

We sure do have a habit of snaffling talented young female tennis players though.

It took fourteen years to convince Johanna Konta she wasn't an Aussie! :w00t:

What an inconceivably bitter individual you are.

Straight in with politics, immigration and Brexit, rather than celebrating the joy of - as it clearly states in the title - an '18-year-old's dream'

I have to wonder with the perpetually outraged such as yourself, whether you actually experience joy in anything?

5-4 in first set. Blimey it's tense!

Off for the night.

To be honest, whoever takes the match, both these girls have a bright future ahead of them!

First qualifier to EVER win a Grand Slam!

Lots of credit to Leylah Fernandez again too.

She'll have a Grand Slam title under her belt before long.

"Last night was special. We witnessed a sporting fairytale unfurl, a new British icon being born, a determined 18-year-old from Bromley making history. All the clichés in the world cannot do justice to Raducanu’s achievement in New York City.

But the great and good of Twitter saw what they see in basically every big sporting or cultural event these days: an opportunity to call everyone racist. And as also always happens these days, they ended up revealing that it is actually them who are most responsible for racialising everyday life today.

With robotic uniformity, the usual suspects tweeted different versions of the same tweet, nodding to Raducanu’s mixed parentage and the fact she moved to the UK from Canada aged two.

Were this just virtue-signalling it would be irritating enough. But there’s a more unpleasant underside to it all. These people apparently could not help but racialise Raducanu. They all felt compelled to rattle off her ethnic background even before getting around to congratulating her. There was an undeniable compulsion to portray her primarily as an immigrant, as mixed-race, not as a fellow Brit or even just a remarkable human being. "

I made factual comments about Emma Raducanu - none of which are open to contradiction - and you turn them into a personal attack on me!  How does stating the blindingly obvious to make a point equate to me being 'inconceivably bitter' and 'permanently outraged'? You need to step back and take better control of yourself. Passing wildly emotive personal judgements based on someone else's true observations says more about you than it does me. Here is what I said:-

You say I did not celebrate her joy (as though I begrudged it or something), when I clearly stated that she is a fine example of the contribution that immigranys make to the UK and then proceeded to refer to her laudable personal achievements and the glory they brought upon her.

My comments regarding Emma Raducanu had nothing whatever to do with race. They had everything to do with the fact that she is an immigrant to the UK. And my point was simple: she, like most immigrants to the UK - wherever they come from - contribute positively to UK life and the need to make it was prompted by the juxtaposition in my mind of her celeberations on court and Nigel Farage's billboard poster of a river of immigrants bringing the UK to breaking point.

And yet you felt the need to write :- "She's a Canadian immigrant to the UK of east European (Romanian) and Chinese extraction." as your first sentence. Nothing to do with race!!

The salient point about Ms Raducanu & her parents that you are overlooking in your comments is that they didn't arrive on these shores in an inflatable rubber dinghy. They came to this country through the correct legal channels, something 'Brexiteers' have no problem with. With tens of thousands of illegal economic migrants turning up on the beaches of Kent, exactly how many is too many? can you give us a number you have in mind?

I am willing to take your point, up to a point, but my sole purpose was to genuinely highlight her bona fide immigrant status to the UK and juxtapose that against Brexiteers' animus towards immigrants and east Europeans in general.

Brexiteers do not just confine their hostility and aversion to illegal immigrants generally or those crossing the English Channel in dinghies. There are legal immigrants from the far flung corners of empire who are a problem for many British people who think their cities are overrun by them to the point where their cultural character and ethos is now unacceptable.  I do not need to give details. English/British xenophobia has a centuries long pedigree and has been directed and many ethnic minorities in the past.

How many dinghy people is too many? I can't answer that. You need immigrants - now more than ever. Most of them are young healthy men. Why not take them and put them to work where they are needed. There are jobs they could be doing that do not require proficiency in English that would facilitate their transition into British society while at the same time benefitting wider society. I'm sure the majority of them would appreciate the opportunity to be independent contributing members of the community. There will always be bad apples but you don't tar a whole group because of those.

The alternative might be to identify the native British wasters who would not work in a fit and sponge off society and the tax-payers purse. Force them to take those jobs that they claim the immigrants are taking from them.

It is Brexit that is intruding more and more into all our lives, the fact that it is a failed venture makes it all the more aggravating. It is not the people who wanted to Remain who should back off. Brexiters should just apologise and try to make amends to the rest of us.

You are completely wrong on several points. It is not illegal to seek asylum. It is incorrect to call the people on dingies "illegal". And their advocates have been saying for years that the UK should provide safe "legal" passage for them, not advocating illegally (against maritime law) turning the dingies around and trying  to force them out of our territorial waters. The Brexiters, notably our Home Secretary, most definately do have a problem with legal asylum. I'm not advocating either way, I am just pointing  out that like most Brexiters you are mistaken on facts.

"Brexiteers do not just confine their hostility and aversion to illegal immigrants generally or those crossing the English Channel in dinghies"  Sweeping statement. You know everybody who voted for Brexit personally do you?

"There are legal immigrants from the far flung corners of empire who are a problem for many British people who think their cities are overrun by them to the point where their cultural character and ethos is now unacceptable"  Again, sweeping statement. Remember, the government won the last election with a landslide victory, including lots of traditional Labour voters, are you saying they are all racists?

"How many dinghy people is too many? I can't answer that."  No, people like you that criticize anyone who has an opinion about immigration never can.

"Most of them are young healthy men"  The most honest thing you've said.

"There are jobs they could be doing that do not require proficiency in English that would facilitate their transition into British society while at the same time benefitting wider society."  Um, what are you thinking exactly? sweeping pavements, digging roads, cleaning toilets?

"There will always be bad apples but you don't tar a whole group because of those"  No you're right we don't, but we could be a bit more 'choosey' about who we allow to come here. Salman Ramadan Abedi was a Libyan refugee rescued by the Royal Navy...he murdered 23 people, mostly children and injured 1017.

"The alternative might be to identify the native British wasters who would not work in a fit and sponge off society and the tax-payers purse. Force them to take those jobs that they claim the immigrants are taking from them. "   Totally agree with that, about time we had a serious shake up of the benefits system.

I'm requesting that any further political discussions be shifted to the Brexit thread, as this whole conversation has become incredibly distasteful

If people want to celebrate a young woman's incredible sporting achievement, here's the place to do it.

If not, I'll request a lock.

Absolutely.  Your ad hominem comments about me are unjustifiable. And it is entirely reasonable of me to make the point that I did without in any way detracting from Emma Raducanu's brilliant achievement. The sorry fact is that you just don't like it. I disrespected nobody and did not denigrate her win.  She deserves every praise.

My reply will be in the Brexit thread.

Brilliant win for  Raducanu. First time ever for a player to win coming from the the qualifying rounds - she'll do very well in the future, as will  Leylah Fernandez.

Apart from the tennis, getting to and winning the US Open - I thought both  their post match interviews (on court after the match) were v. good, for two teenagers.
