Still Waters Posted September 13, 2021 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2021 (IP: Staff) · Ten thousand years after woolly mammoths vanished from the face of the Earth, scientists are embarking on an ambitious project to bring the beasts back to the Arctic tundra. The prospect of recreating mammoths and returning them to the wild has been discussed – seriously at times – for more than a decade, but on Monday researchers announced fresh funding they believe could make their dream a reality. The boost comes in the form of $15m (£11m) raised by the bioscience and genetics company Colossal, co-founded by Ben Lamm, a tech and software entrepreneur, and George Church, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School who has pioneered new approaches to gene editing. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/sep/13/firm-bring-back-woolly-mammoth-from-extinction https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210913005498/en/ 4 1 1 Top

There are enough billions of dollars to give everybody food, a home, medical care and a job if that was our priority. It is not the money that is lacking but the desire. 1 1 Top

So what - nobody is supposed to spend money on anything but the hungry and homeless? Really? There's a lot more than $15 million that go to those causes already. Let's do some other things with it too, k? Edited September 13, 2021 by moonman 1 Top

+OverSword Posted September 13, 2021 #9 Share Posted September 13, 2021 There is a theory that replacing the mammoth in the tundra could reverse the warming trend https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/can-bringing-back-mammoths-stop-climate-change-180969072/ 4 Top

Gumball Posted September 13, 2021 #12 Share Posted September 13, 2021 Would the warming of the planet, for whatever reason you choose to believe, not make it pretty uncomfortable for these guys? Will hunters not just wipe them out for trophies quicker than they can reproduce? Blow your money on whatever you like but this seems like properly pi**ing it up against a wall. 1 Top

Nnicolette Posted September 14, 2021 #14 Share Posted September 14, 2021 I wish people would stop announcing this every 5 years or so and get it done! Even though mammoths belong in the ice age... It seems kinda cruel to put one out when everything's on fire. 1 Top

But typically the announcements are more about fundraising than anything 1 Top
