Or the whole thing was completely false to begin with. The news doesn't have Trump to rag on all of the time. The next best thing is to try and convince the alt-right that something big was going to happen hoping they would show up. Put a few anonymous posts on the internet and all that showed up were the counter protesters ready for any physical altercations. It is what antifa does any and every chance they get. I bet they are sorely disappointed.

There weren't all that many Antifa people there.

The alt-right does have a point:  the Feds will use any pix they get to see if they can identify the people and connect them to J6, as well as any future event.  So just showing up helps the govt.

And, like you said, the press just wants to sell subscriptions so they'll sensationalize anything they can get their hands on.

It could be that there aren't as many people that care about the January 6 rioters as hyped it to be.  Most people understand "Play stupid games and win stupid prizes" and all that after all.

Also, every time the extreme right has perpetrated some very violent act,  people loosely associated with them tend to pull back and reconsider.  That's what happened after Oklahoma City.  Timothy McVey was executed for that one.  There can be consequences.
