I never considered a nuclear exchange, to be a reasonable issue, in my lifetime, until a friend and I accidentally discovered an underground fallout shelter at our college, which contained supplies from the 1960s, designed to be utilized in the event this occurred.

The thing that surprised me, was how few supplies were in the shelter, and how small it was. I remember also being surprised at what type of supplies there were. As I vaguely recall, there was everything from freeze dried food, canned water, to women’s tampons. This just added to the creepiness of our accidental discovery.

Of course, if you understand early fallout procedure, you weren’t supposed to have to stay in the shelter for very long, after the fallout occurs.

Upon this discovery, it became pretty obvious that someone thought this was a distinct possibility, at least in the 1960s.

Fallout shelters were very common. I remember seeing the signs that indicated their location at a couple local elementary schools and on the campus of the local university.

The program that led to these buildings being designated and marked as fallout shelters was launched during the Cold War. This was a time when nuclear war with Russia was a very real and rising threat; a time of duck-and-cover drills in schools and educational films about how to build your own fallout shelter at home.

By the early 1960s, then-President John F. Kennedy decided it was also time for a more concerted and comprehensive national safety plan. In July 1961, he gave a speech outlining a new program.

"Tomorrow I am requesting of the Congress new funds ... to identify and mark space in existing structures — public and private — that could be used as fallout shelters in case of attack," Kennedy told the nation.

The fears of a climate-apocalypse are unfounded in my opinion. However, I think there are very real dangers that could spell the end of our civilization, The idea that we are modifying viruses to increase their effectiveness and we are currently fighting one such virus that escaped containment doesn’t give me a sense of confidence for the future.

Im also intrigued by the weaponization of space and the potential of creating a debris field that would knock out satellite capabilities. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20130609-the-day-without-satellites

that was actually a plan 40 or so years ago, iirc gorbachev or andropov said we have "asymmetrical plan" to combat American military space program. that is exactly what it was, shooting every sat, in low orbit  to deny access to space for everyone. so it can not be used against them

I don’t believe that humanity is doomed, but I suspect our current state of confusion, is.

Take for example a recent medication which I had to fill, under my Obamacare era health plan. The medication costs roughly $1600 in the United States, but only $30 in India. That’s just one example of bad government.

Americans are not being protected from ravenous commercial enterprise, and that’s a republic ending problem.

You don’t need many examples like that, to recognize that part of humanity is doomed by its own poor government.

I believe that the government of the United States will be destroyed by natural disasters, because it lacks the foresight and the motivation to prepare and protect its citizens. Instead, it spends fortunes trying to revamp other cultures, which don’t appreciate our revamping, as well as spending hundreds of billions of dollars on black budget projects, such as the negligent NSA spy machine, designed to capture every fleeting element of our lives, but which can’t see a killer virus coming, despite being directly told that it was, and in a thread expressly for that purpose. I could tell them a meteor was about to hit the Earth, years ago, and after it did, they would say that it was just my lucky day.  I could tell them that our luck was about to run out in Japan, and then after three nuclear reactors lose their containment vessels, and nuclear waste runs out the bottom, they would say that was just my lucky day too.

Yes, this government will be destroyed, but not humanity. The people won’t rely on false testimony to endure, but on a new government, built by the only Man worthy of a monarchy.

I would prefer that my country self heal, rather than be forced to heal, or be rescued, but there is no viable mechanism for this to occur, because of the criminalization of government by commercial enterprise.

I would expect that this pattern could continue for a while, if Ancient Rome is any example. However, New Rome, can’t even repair the roads we have now, and we’re only about 225 years in. Instead, my government was building roads over in Iraq and Afghanistan, because of the Bush family. One family, corrupted by the petroleum industry, corrupts an entire country.

What kind of political party spouts off that it protected a relative handful of Americans after 911, but failed to protect Americans when the great virus came to our shores, or was it those two Towers of Babel that really mattered?  You don’t fool me. You may fool these sheep, in need of a real Shepherd.

The Earth is already at war with U.S., and it doesn’t take much wide-eyed opinion to see that. All it takes is an ounce of tears, and those we shall have in abundance.

I think there is a bigger chance of the left wing media giving millennials psychosis & depression than there is anything happening to them due to the weather. In fact it's already happening.

@Raptor , Good point made , but it's not too late to save America from self destruction , other Countries are having the same problems . The virus infected the world and is slowly being eradicated ,which I.M.O. will last another 100 years ,however America should realise that it cannot go on being the world's policeman , so it should withdraw all the troops from every corner of the world except it's own territories , if other Countries decide to have internal wars , let them get on with it instead of stepping in and probably making things worse , as has been proven in Afghanistan , and Vietnam , which has killed a lot of Americans . Your people did not want these conflicts and neither did our people , and the blame lies with the Politicians , when will these so called leaders see sense . and do what is good for the nation instead of trying to maintain power . The top of the tree is not always a good place to be when a storm hits.

Doomed? No I don't think so, humanity as a whole will survive but certainly we'll definitely be entering another "Dark Age" in the future for sure.

IMO humanity are not doomed, we just ***** hard our descendents, hopefully we can reverse back part of the damages and hope that the upcoming new viruses don't wreck too much.

“Self destruction” is exactly how the official Christian ending goes.

It goes by plague after plague after plague, until … if need be, there should be no flesh saved alive. It’s the “need be” part, that’s hard to grasp, because we should all hope and pray that it would not be needed.

So where are these plague masters? Lions and tigers and meteors…. oh my?

Repentance is not an option, it’s a command, or what you refuse to believe in, is brought down to your level.

I once worked in property management. One of the buildings we managed was a high rise with a CD fallout shelter.in the basement. By the time l was there in the late 70s it had been ransacked of most of its supplies except for a  number of  large gold colored tins marked “survival biscuits “

When I was a kid I remember colder winters and hotter summers.

It leaves me scratching my head at all the claimed climate records being set.

I doubt humanity is doomed. Our present modern civilisation is in for a rough time though and I agree with some of the academics that there might be a lot less of us around by the end of this century. Not only through climate change.

Twenty years ago NASA readjusted recorded temperature measurements for the past one hundred years.   That's why now it's claimed hotter temperature records are being set today.  The hottest years on record were in the 20's and 30's.

I can see great famine coming but it wouldn't be because of climate change.  It'll be because of poor Socialist policy.  Trying to combat something man has no control over.  If you misdiagnose a problem, you risk killing more people.  We should be working at adapting to climate change.  That is what man is good at doing.  He's been doing it for some 200 thousand years.  I suppose that it doesn't register with anyone that we are 170 years into the latest warm period.  It ended what was known as the Mini Ice Age and there were 3 more periods (2 warming and 1 cooling) going back to year 0.  In 1177bce, civilization collapsed to what was considered climatic changes, but it wasn't caused by the activities of man.  Man just poorly adapted to the events.

Well when I was a kid I can remember two heat waves in quick succession and during one it reached 38C here in the UK.

These days they claim global warming if its 25C

I assume you mean '75 and '76?   It hit  35.9c in '76.

Didn't reach 38c in the UK until 2003.  Beaten again in 2019.

Of course, if you disregard NASA and the MetO, we're in an new ice age and temps all over the world are plummeting as glaciers advance ......    Probably why there was record rainfall in France on Tuesday.
