The Brexit Bonus Thread

Silver

Recommended Posts

Following Saru's decision to close the Road to Brexit, which as he rightly says had run it's course and there was no longer a 'road to Brexit' as it has been done, I thought it might be interesting to have another thread, a bit more positive this time and a bit less divisive. Brexit is a fact, it's time to move on, and we need to "get behind" it.

Hopefully this can be a place where people can just jot down the Brexit bonuses and benefits as they occur to them, you never know it might make die-hard "Remoaners" change their minds!

I'll start with this positive:

The government is considering allowing shops to sell goods under the old imperial measures only (they can do this currently, but they also have to give the metric equivalent more prominence). If there is enough support, we will also change our currency to pounds, shillings and pence, and luxury goods can be priced in guineas.

This will have the benefit of allowing the over 70s feel "more at home" when shopping. As our imports are also reduced,we will have less need to understand the "new-fangled" metric system.

A retrograde step if ever there was one. The world's scientific and engineering communities led the way in adopting what was a no-brainer, using the metric unit system (SI, Systeme International). No country officially employs the Imperial System anymore and all countries are in the process of phasing out its use - some being further along in that undertaking than others. In countries where Imperial units are still current it is only the aged and the uneducated who resist or reject the metric system and are holding back its progress.

Nearly every country in the world has officially embraced the metric system  because it is comprehensive, coherent and consistent. Only the USA, Myanmar and Liberia have not, and the latter two are already in the process of doing so officially. In fact, the US does not use the Imperial System at all, having its own system of US Customary Units which are often the same in name, but not in measure.

Another fact is that the basic units of the Imperial System are now only defined in terms of Metric Units; for example, the inch is internationally and officially defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres, and the pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilogram, etc. So units of measure such as the Imperial ton or the mile only have meaning in terms of the Metric System.

It seems that Britain is retreating or being led back into its past, but it is a recreation of the past in style, not substance.

Ted, forever facetious when it comes to Brexit.

It’s a none story, metric is here to stay so no “retreating or being led back to the past”.

The return(or not) of Imperial measures is symbolic posturing for the feeble minded.

Another Brexit Bonus! The crown stamp will reappear on pint glasses! Tory MP Lee Anderson has described this as "one of the many benefits of Brexit". I'm sure he will soon tell us what the others are.

The shelves may be empty, the economy may be stalling and further unrest may be on its way in Northern Ireland – but according to a jubilant right-wing newspaper all is well, because the crown stamp is about to make a return to British pint glasses.

Declaring a “Brexit Triumph”, The Express posted news that the marking will “FINALLY” return to UK glasses after 15 years in a ‘blue passport’ moment for pub goers.

Speaking to The Express, a government source said: “We took back control so we could make decisions which work in our own best interests.

Lee Anderson, the Conservative MP for Ashfield, was also delighted at the return of the crown.

He said: “This is one of the many benefits of Brexit. The first pint I have with the crown on will taste much better.”

The United Arab Emirates plans to invest $13.8bn in Britain over the next five years, building on the two country’s long-running business ties, an Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund said on Thursday.

The fund, called Mubadala, said the investment in Britain’s energy transition, infrastructure, technology and life sciences industries marked an expansion of its Sovereign Investment Partnership with Britain’s Office for Investment.

Mubadala in March agreed to invest 800 million pounds in life sciences with Britain’s investment office, which said it was contributing an additional 200 million pounds.

Its good for a country to do things its own way.

We currently use both metric and imperial systems. Engineers and builders use feet and inches a lot. If we buy beer at a pub or carpets things still come in pints and squared feet. And at the same time lots of things have metric measures on.

I say let each outlet use whatever they are used to using and which works for its customers. Both systems are taught, should continue to be taught, and it improves the mental arithmetic of kids if they have to learn how to convert between the two. It gives them a sense of Britishness having a system to call their own, and at the same time if they struggle with maths they can just use metric.

We need to do additional work on our culture to undo the `you are Europeans` ideology. Open up the divide, put in a bit of jingoism to remind people they are from one of the great peoples of the world. We need to build up how people see themselves as distinct and different from the others. The French do it, the Japanese do it, the Russians do it, the Chinese do it, it creates a sense of togetherness and pride in ones nation.

The Japanese have gone as far as making it illegal for politicians to use WW2 to create hysteria and insecurity to promote their cause. That needs doing too. We need fair politicians based on the merits of policies, not the snowflakes trying to close down our democracy by crying racist every time someone disagrees with them. We could also do with making student unions illegal, I mean that there is actually WW2 style propaganda at school. Why do we let our children be targeted by it?

Does the article explain why this couldn't have happened had we not left the EU? If indeed this investment  could only have been made post Brexit it is indeed very significant.

As I have pointed out before others would not invest in the UK if its supposed to be on the brexit skids.

So you have the question reversed. The investment could have been made without brexit but this shows there is no difference between EU membership or not for investors. :tu:

Not only is this type of investment tiny in the overall scheme of the UK budget, its also in sectors which are entirely domestic which means they are guaranteed to make a return regardless of Brexit. Its really immaterial to any discussion of brexit positive or negative.

I bet some folks would still like to get their hands on it. ;)

The truth about Ireland’s monster €240bn debt: it wasn’t the banks. It equates to €103,300 for every worker in the State and we’ll probably never pay it off.

Just like in America I would like to see the UK set out a British Dream.

Work needs doing on our culture and togetherness, and we need to use it to get most of the population onboard. We can make a great future happen, we need everyone to get involved and do their bit. This is something our democracy is currently weak on. We managed it in WW2, and it was present for centuries before, but we seem to have lost our drive to reach for the stars at the top.

This is a pre-Thatcher mentality where the focus is no longer just on finances, but includes peoples hopes, ambitions, and dreams too. We need a one people, one nation, one future, focus. We need to be on the guard against socialism. While its followers mostly have best intentions at heart if it goes to far again it will once again bankrupt our state.

We need to suspend foreign aid and divert it into setting back up our industries. We need to block all asset stripping from Cadburys to ARM cpus. Every time a star emerges the government seems content to let it be sold off to an overseas firm. That is not how economic superpowers are built. We also need to divert some of that foreign aid into innovation and research. Lets set up some scientific parks where we can get ourselves a first mover advantage based on emerging technologies. Just like Amazon did, just like Facebook did, etc.

We also need a strong military. Following behind in the shadow of the USA is not in our national interest. After 70 years of doing it and dismantling ourselves to please them we are weak. While they are our close friends, and allies, we need to stand on our own two feet. I would like to see 2 more aircraft carrier, and 3 x our destroyers and frigates and subs.

We have already cancelled our order for more F-35s, and we need to phase out the Eurofighter too. Lets get behind Tempest and Taranis and make ourselves a brutal air power.

Ireland needs luring out of the EU and into CANZUK.

Economically it would do them good seeing as the UK is their main trading partner. And it cuts out all the EU nonsense going on.

Yeah England!  You shot your economy in the foot, in a fashion that will take upwards of a decade to fix, honked off every single one of your regional allies and trading partners, AND managed to do it in about the worst fashion possible because a bus told you so, but you sure did show that five percent Muslim population who was boss! Yeah that's right! The White people run this ****! And sure we're running it right off of a cliff out of pure racist spite and ignorance, but what's important is WE are driving the bus!

Seriously, guys, next election? Reunite with the EU before its too late. You're a tiny island in the north sea, with the Falklands and a spot in the Indian Ocean, the whole 'rule Britannia' thing only worked when you had colonies and where a world superpower.

I would hate for this thread to become just a to and fro like the Road to Brexit.

The title is "Brexit Bonuses"!

I have given two.

Just saying, in effect, nothing has changed, isn't good enough. This thread as I stated and hoped, is for the occasional posting of the benefits that Brexit has brought. Benefits that Brexiting has brought about. It is supposed to be about positivity.

Brexit has happened, we all need to get behind it, so post the things we have been able to achieve by Brexiting!

So not a benefit then. The absence of a negative is not a positive.

Saying there's a bonus to brexit is like saying a shot foot was worth it because the hospital gave you a pudding cup while you where getting bandaged up.

This I think is relevant to this thread. Cookie says he would like to see the UK have a British Dream, a Thatcherite state and more cuts to foreign aid. He doesn't say explicitly, but I assume he sees Brexit as a way to achieve this, something we couldn't achieve while  in the SM.

So, perhaps  "dreams of British Utopia" may be seen as a "benefit of Brexit". But no actual substance yet.

Your not going to get me to fall in behind stupidity and its consequences. Haven't seen a single actual bonus (your ironic ones don't count).

I mean if you want to say '**** the poor, I want them to starve and die off so the city looks nice, pretty, and lets be honest here even though I'll never say it out loud, SUPER white' there's easier ways to do it then Brexit.

Might be :tu: but highlighting an EU champion and their economic circumstances after decades of EU membership is a useful comparison with the UK as to how the EU can add value, or not going forward. ;)
