Some Republicans Fear Tighter Election Rules Could Boomerang on the Party (msn.com)

Since the 2020 election, Republicans in state legislatures have been tightening rules around voting and ballot security, passing more than 100 pieces of legislation in 24 states. Now some Republicans in Michigan, where they are weighing tightening voter rules, are pausing their efforts—in part because they believe some election-law changes could hurt their own party at the ballot box.

Which goes to show you, these laws were indeed changed to stifle Democratic votes.

What rules exactly? Can you give an example of how these rules target Democrats? Is it because Democrats are more likely not not have ID or know how to use the internet?

If it hurts Democrats that was OK. But if it hurts them they have 2nd thoughts. Unless you take that another way?

Information on racial makeup of different districts is available online using DOC's Tiger files.  By regressing racial data onto voting history, one can produce estimates of how minorities are likely to vote, district-by-district, even block-by-block.  Blacks and other minorities tend to vote Democrat.

So all one has to do is assemble a Republican voting district,  then include just enough Democrats to keep them from getting a majority.  Thus, there are not enough districts that vote Democrat to offset those that vote Republican.  That's gerrymandering at it worst (if you're a Democrat).

The rest of the rules are designed only to make it difficult for people who will probably vote Democrat to vote at all.  Rules/laws such as making it illegal to provide food/drink to people waiting to vote, reduced voting sites in districts likely to vote Democrat.  Outlawing vote-by-mail, absentee ballots, and so on are designed only to distort the voting process and damage democracy.

The motivation seems to be the fear that in another generation whites will be a minority.  That thought scares the **** out of the Rub loony farm (I didn't say "conservatives" because there still exist a few Republican conservatives who are being purged from the party by the loonies.  America needs a conservative party as a counter-balance to liberal extremists.  But the Republican party, as currently constituted, is not it.).

This summer state Rep. Ann Bollin, the Republican who chairs the Michigan House Elections and Ethics Committee, said there was “not support” to make the absentee voting process more difficult. Ms. Bollin, herself a former township clerk, cited concerns from county clerks, including Republicans from largely conservative areas, who said the bills could have negative impacts on voter participation among voters of all stripes, Republicans as well as Democrats.

The move has set off a fight within the state GOP over whether the new rules are necessary and whether they could actually hurt Republicans in the state. Other proposals have also been shelved for now………

………No-excuse absentee voting has become deeply rooted in voters’ habits, says Elizabeth Hundley, a registered Republican who is Livingston’s county clerk. “In our city primaries this August, 80% of all the ballots cast were absentee,” she said. “The voters here have said that they want no-excuse absentee ballots to continue.”…….……

…….After a summer when legislative Republicans pumped the brakes on some of the new voter laws, a citizens group led by veteran Republican strategists is proposing to bring many of them back directly to the legislature, including the identification rules around absentee voting. The group will need to collect 340,000 signatures in six months, once they begin circulating petitions.

The group says they understand some of the concerns from local Republican officials, but there are bigger concerns in their minds.

“The real issue is confidence in the system,” said Jamie Roe, spokesman for the effort. “Democracies fall apart when people lose confidence in the system.”……..

What I’m reading seems to indicate it’s more about support (or the lack of) in some rural areas for those measures, not about collateral disenfranchisement from policy supposably targeting Democrat voters. Likewise, I am sure there are Democrats who support voter integrity also.

This is fake news. You can give people in line food and drink. The rule you are referencing is about campaigning at polling stations and campaigners gifting people in the lines water bottles or political swag.

If Democrats are worried about this maybe they should just have a snack before going to vote?

by “reduce voting sires in Democrat districts”:are you talking about limiting drop box locations?

Poll tending is already illegal.  There is no need for additional laws.

There is a simple way to test your hypothesis:  without saying a word about politics, simply hand somebody a water bottle in full view of a policeman and see who gets arrested.  There are folks out there planning to do this as test cases.  We'll have to wait for the next election to see the results.

Here is what the Georgia law says:

"nor shall any person give, offer to give,  or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector"

There are lots of statements in the law that clearly make it illegal to poll tend, but this particular phrase does not make an exception for simply providing food or drink.  According to the words of the law, it is illegal to provide food or water.  There is an exception for poll workers providing water, but for others to do it is illegal.

The new law includes giving food and water in a section on electioneering that places new restrictions on the practice. It compares food and drink to gifts that might be given to a voter.

But whatever, I guess the premise of your claim is that Democrat voters are less competent at feeding themselves? Need more frequent snacks? How would this target Democrats?

People have frequently handed out drink and snacks at Georgia polling places in the past.  These have mainly been liberal groups who do so without electioneering, but their identity is usually well known.  The purpose of the law is to shut down these activities.  That is being done so that conservative groups don't have to put out any effort to counter the liberals.  In other words:  the conservatives are lazy.

I think I have spotted a loophole, though.  Simply stay more than 150 feet from the building and everything should be legal.

So the purpose is to shut down liberal groups NOT ELECTIONEERING because Republicans are to lazy to NOT ELECTIONEER?

Could simply change the headline to 'All Republicans Fear' and leave it at that.

Most succinct and accurate article in history.

No. Liberal groups are not electioneering now, but the Rubs don't want them anywhere near a voting booth so they try to change the laws.  Republicans are too lazy to get their people out.  Maybe it's because they won't lose anything if the changes go through.

What sense does that make? If the liberal groups are not electioneering, then what difference does that make? I thought you guys were arguing these measures were designed to suppress Democrat votes?

What would the advantage be for Republican groups to go out and do the same thing these liberal groups are doing?

Just by being there and being known, one might change a vote or two.  But either way, it makes a good impression that can be exploited later.  Besides, there is such a thing as doing something as a public service.

The laws ARE intended to suppress Democratic votes, or at least reduce the number to give Rubs a better chance.

They could gain some support by creating the impression that they're really nice guys after all.  But they don't do it so the party higher-ups try to compensate.

I hope this is the death rattle of the GOP, but a dying beast that's thrashing around can still do a lot of damage in the meantime...like on Jan 6th.
