The Taliban wants to speak at the UN General Assembly in New York

A senior US state department official told the AP that the committee "would take some time to deliberate," suggesting that the Taliban's representative might not be able to speak at this current session.

When the Taliban previously ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, the hardline Islamist group was not given a seat at the UN, and instead recognized the former government that controlled the country before them.

I disagree.  We all but handed the country to them so lets set up a system of perks to encourage them to govern well.  Not necessarily give them full membership or allow them to address the assembly at this time, more like a seat at the kiddie table and perhaps let their representative join a committee.  It could help to discourage them from cooperating with foreign terror groups at the very least.

I like your thoughts process on this.  Definitely one of those decisions that needs to use the list of positives and list of negatives trick.  

It would be recognizing the Taliban as the ruling government.

We already know that not everyone in Afghanistan is a muslim extremist.  And you never know, the leader may end up being someone with enough of an ego that he cares a little bit that the international community recognizes him.  One way ensure the taliban rule with an iron fist and religious zealotry is to isolate and alienate them.

They are the ruling government.  If we can keep them from allowing foreign terrorists to set up shop by trying to work with them a bit then what's the harm?  We're not going to be able to reinstall the puppet that ran away from the country with a ton of money and let them take over.

i'm sure some in A -stan are not, but Taliban IS.

of course we know, we have seen it for over 100 years at least. they never care what international community think.  

what do you think Taliban wants to talk about in the UN?  they will blame the west for invasion and trying to turn its people from their only right path, which is Islam, and the culture they lived in for 1000s of years

The world is shrinking.  I was watching a BBC interview with the president of Pakistan who says this is a slightly different and more mature taliban than ran things 20 years ago that understands the benefit or cooperating with a larger community.

And a lot of middle eastern countries as well, which shows why it's not a big deal to talk with the taliban.  The UN is basically meh.
