Rapidly melting Arctic is causing chaos in world’s oceans

The Arctic is in the grip of a climate crisis that is driving ocean warming and rising sea levels around the world, a new report has concluded.

Ice levels dropped to record lows in 2018 and 2019, new data reveals, while parts of the Arctic ocean have seen a near 90 per cent reduction in average sea ice thickness.

Since 1979, ice levels have dropped by almost 13 per cent, according to the annual ‘Copernicus Ocean State Report’ released on Thursday.

Arctic summer sea ice has been decreasing since 1950; winter ice since 1970.  Unfortunately we didn't start record keeping until 1979.

There has been a 70% reduction in ice cover between March 1979 and September 2018.  That's a little like comparing apples and oranges; though, because it is comparing summer ice with winter ice.

The corresponding differences are:  winter ice:   16.34 X106 kmin March 1979 to 14.29 X106 km2 in March 2017, a reduction in ice cover of 12.55%.

                                                          summer ice:  7.67 X106 km2 in September 1980 to 3.57 X106 km2 in September 2012, a reduction of 53.46%.

Ice cover is not the same as ice thickness or total ice volume, subjects on which I have no data.

Here is what ice cover has been doing, according to the NCDC.

It's called ...We do not live in a static Climate.  Ice Ages come...Ice Ages go.  So...let's say that the incredible number of dinosaurs expelling methane changed the climate and they all died as a result.  Not all life died did it.  And if that hadn't happened then we wouldn't really even exist right now would we?  So, why is it 'doom' if Manmade Climate Change kills all the humans?

So true.  Human civilization may collapse and humanity near extinction, but it's only natural and the earth will be OK.

Some people argue that we are not powerful enough to change the earth's climate.  But we are stupid enough not to have done  jacksh*t  to help us with our survival.
