Petrol station workers are hit by 'unacceptable' abuse as London bears brunt of fuel crisis

Local councils warned not to use the word 'panic' as it might make the government seem incompetent:

The government has advised councils not to use the phrases "panic" or "panic buying" about fuel supply problems, documents seen by the BBC reveal.

Slides prepared by the Cabinet Office's Behavioural Science Team also advised against using language that morally judges people buying petrol.

A Green Party council leader called the recommendations "nonsensical".

The government said it worked "closely with councils... on communications to encourage a co-ordinated response."

The Washington Post:

Who could guess Brexit would cause food and gas shortages? Actually, anyone.

Brexiters insisted none of these problems would happen — though it was obvious they would

It was a perfect encapsulation of the gulf between Brexit dreams and the crushing reality: On Tuesday morning, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled his proposed space project. Post-Brexit Britain, he said, would turn into “Galactic Britain.”

But away from the announcement, the country had ground to a standstill. A fuel crisis triggered by Brexit had led to panic-buying, with long lines at gas stations and many outlets running out of supply. Grown men were fighting in garage forecourts. In reality, many people in post-Brexit Britain can’t even get to the nearest town. Andromeda seems a bit of a stretch.

Somewhere in Johnson’s head, where British space rockets dominate the galaxy, Brexit is still a marvelous success. But down here on Earth, it is proving catastrophic.

Brexit food and gas shortages were predictable. Brexiteers just ignored them. - The Washington Post (archive.ph)

Retailers say no improvement in supplies:

"Trying to calm this down appears to be a monumental task at the moment," said PRA chairman Brian Madderson.

"The surge in demand appears to be continuing," he said. "There's been no easing off of the pressure from drivers wanting to refuel whenever they can, wherever they can."

Mr Madderson said he had written to the government this morning to warn them of the likelihood of rising prices at the pumps, caused by the value of the pound falling against the dollar and the rise in the price of Brent crude oil.

Thousands of Germans who live in the UK have been written to by the government asking them to drive lorries in an attempt to ease the UK fuel crisis, even though the majority have never been at the wheel of an HGV.

They were included in a 1m-letter mass mailing that also tried to recruit ambulance drivers to get behind the wheel of lorries.

The recruitment drive is aimed at easing the UK’s supply chain shortages and a lack of petrol at forecourts.

Woman who bragged about getting full tank of petrol has it stolen

A woman who bragged to her neighbour after getting a full tank of petrol during the fuel crisis had it stolen from her car.

Jenni Turner, 34, was shocked when she returned to her Ford Fiesta to find someone had drilled two small holes in her tank and removed the fuel last Sunday.

Turner, from Erith, south-east London, had managed to get £50 worth of fuel the day before, after many forecourts had been closed due to panic buying.

I remember an old Monty Python routine in which the police spokesman called the criminal a mindermast.  Upon questioning, he explained to the TV presenter that if they called him a mastermind it was  too depressing for the police.

If I lived in Europe I would be using the problems in UK supply chain as a heads up.

The UK started it's recovery from covid early as the vaccination program started several months earlier than Europe.

The predicted and now real economic rebound has created many bottlenecks that are causing the present UK problems.

I expect Europe will see similar problems but with the original several month delay built in. :geek:

This could bring timing of various supply issues on top of Christmas and the end of the year.

Coupled with increased energy demands from cold weather and general weather transport problems reducing supply capacity it could create a perfect storm.

And unlike the UK where the problems have been drip fed into the system over time European problems are more likely to happen all at once. As demand increases further in the last few weeks before Christmas.

I will call this my European, cliff edge, prediction.  ;)

It is free but virtual donations are welcome.  :D

From the article: Firefighters allegedly told Ms Turner that they had been attending to similar incidents all day.

I'm not sure I believe that.

I went on fact checker earlier today and the country with the least government control over its media is Norway.

The UK comes about 35th out of 190 countries which is okay but not great. Most notable was Sky News who is seen as being very unbiased (us Brexiteers sure know that!!!). The BBC is seen as having a centre-left to moderate left bias (we knew that too!!!). And overall the UK media is reported as being moderate right which I think is brilliant. Its helps explain why we didnt vote Corbyn in (thank God!!!).

The USA media came in at about 44, so its less free than the UK. Of most notable concern was journalists afraid to go against the government for fear of financial reprisals or being hounded out of their jobs, and the hysteria towards Trump which apparently still exists even though he left office a year back.

Across the EU, and most notably Germany, we have mostly centre-left and a deeply ingrained fear of anything on the right. When I read fact checker biases and compare it with the origins of the anti-Brexiteers here, do you know they all match up? Remarkable.

I think we have gotten to the bottom of the illogical attacks against an independent Britain. To them they are logical, they believe what their media tells them.

So we need 10,000 and Belgium with a population tiny compared to ours needs 5000.

So Belgium have a worse crises than us. Prepare oneself! I`m sure someone will blame Brexit lol.

https://www.spiked-online.com/2021/09/30/the-relentless-apocalypticism-of-remainers/

"While this Brexit-fuelled apocalypticism no doubt meets some psycho-social need on the part of our bruised elites, it is doing the rest of us no favours at all. It is clouding public judgement, distorting reality and turning entirely surmountable challenges – like a driver shortage – into devastating blows.

So, right now, it’s important to remember one thing in all this – that while Brexit may have been the end of their world, it is still the beginning of ours."
