WHO looks to revive probe into COVID-19 origins with new team

The World Health Organization (WHO) is looking to revive a probe into the origins of the COVID-19 virus, assembling a team of 20 scientists to hunt for new evidence, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The new probe comes after an initial WHO inquiry — including visits to Wuhan, China, the site of the first confirmed COVID-19 outbreak in late 2019 — found that that the data provided by Chinese scientists was insufficient to answer critical questions about the virus' origin.

WHO officials said that the new team of scientists, named the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens, may be charged with examining whether the novel virus emerged from a lab, as well as broader inquiries into future virus risks and the links with human behavior, according to the Journal.

This latest probe will most likely go the way of the one ordered by President Biden where the results were inconclusive. It is unlikely China will give WHO (or any other investigators for that matter) access to all necessary data and information. And they most definitely will not give them access to any of their labs. They refuse to accept any responsibility for the virus and continue to point their fingers elsewhere.

I'm not sure the exact distance, but the lab looks like it is 10 miles from the market place. It's right around the area anyway. Everything is quite conspicuous.

Regardless, with such a fertile breeding ground for viruses what can you expect? The animal trading should be illegal. 47,000 live animals were sold at the market between 2017 and 2019. 38 species and 31 protected and high risk species. I saw a documentary on TV this past year documenting the poaching of pangolins. They are believed to have ointments to cure diseases and are priced high on the black market.

SHANGHAI, June 9 (Reuters) - More than 47,000 live animals were for sale in markets in Wuhan in the two and a half years before the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in the city in late 2019, new research showed, highlighting the risks of disease from China's wildlife trade.

A paper published in the open access journal Scientific Reports said as many as 38 species were sold in 17 markets in Wuhan between May 2017 and November 2019, including 31 protected species, with poor welfare and hygiene raising health risks.

The World Health Organization on Wednesday named 26 scientists to a new advisory body devoted to understanding the origins of covid-19 and other future outbreaks, marking a change in approach for the world’s top global health body to one of the most politically sensitive issues of a pandemic that has killed more than 4.8 million people.

The group includes scientists from the United States and China, as well as 24 other nations, and will be formalized after a brief period of public consultation. It is set to consider not only the big, unresolved question of the novel coronavirus — how did it first infect humans? — but it will also establish a framework for future outbreaks involving other pathogens so that similar big questions are not left unresolved again.

“It’s a real opportunity right now to get rid of all the noise, all the politics surrounding this and focus on what we know, what we don’t know and what, urgently, we need to all focus our attention on,” Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the WHO’s emerging disease and zoonosis unit, said in an interview.

Can someone explain to me why the origin of the virus is important?

China didn't want the pandemic, the rest of the world didn't want it, and everyone will do everything they can to prevent another outbreak.

How does blame stop a repeat scenario?

Its purpose is to evaluate whether project objectives were met, to determine how effectively the project was run, to learn lessons for the future, and to ensure that the organization gets the greatest possible benefit from the project.

I'm sorry, that's just a load of waffle!

If the Covid-19 pandemic started in Wuhan, the CCP will know how, and take steps to avoid a similar outbreak.
